As Gabriel turned around, he saw a figure, a woman. She seemed vaguely familiar, but he couldn't quite place her. Who was she? He could hardly think; the urge to kill, to tear into something living, was strong. Her heart sounded like thunder. Suddenly she lunged forward, yelling something and ensuring he perceived her as a threat. He barely felt the slight sting of the injection, but he heard her spine crack, along with her ribs and most of her bones as they landed on a red velvet bench. He looked down and stared at the needle in his abdomen for a long moment before pulling it out and staring at the woman. A gasp of horror sounded, and a man whispered," she's dead" in a shocked voice. Karl, he remembered as his sanity slowly began to return. Karl looked at Gabriel as if he couldn't believe Gabriel had done this. Lightning flashed, and he saw clearly the now-dead woman who had attacked him. He raised his face to the light that commanded his kind alone and then peered down at her. Anna, his Anna, his confused mind registered. She was so still, not moving, her wide brown eyes still open. The truth of what he had done and to whom gripped him hard in the next instant. The confusion turned to horror and pain, and the beast howled in agony to the moon as he gently clutched his fallen mate to his chest. As the beast transformed into a man once more, the tormented howls became a man's bellow of soul-deep misery as he gazed down at the woman who had given her life to save a monster. A monster who she had loved, and who had destroyed her.
