Scott Summers could barely believe what was going on. "What is wrong with you? You've hung out plenty of times before." But of course things have been different since they defeated Apocalypse, him and the girl sitting next to him shared some kind of connection he couldn't quite explain.
It's been so long since they've spent time together. He couldn't remember being alone with her, at least not like this.
"Scott, is everything alright?" The beautiful Jean Grey asked.
"Huh… Oh yeah sure. I was just thinking about stuff." He replied
It was a beautiful night. He and Jean had just gone out for milkshakes after a grueling Danger Room session. Now they were sitting in Scott's red convertible on a hilltop road that overlooked the entire town of Bayville.
They'd been there for about a half hour talking about school and music. You know, all the usual stuff that young mutant teenagers would talk about.
"I'm glad we were finally able to do this" Jean said with that smile that always seemed to make Scott's heart flutter.
"Uh yeah… me too" Scott replied as he rubbed the back of his neck like he always did when he was nervous.
"What the heck is it about her that makes me act this way?" he asked himself "Is it that beautiful flowing red hair or those deep green eyes that just draw you in or is it her soft, caring voice that I hope I'm lucky enough to hear every day?". He didn't understand how he could face a whole squad of sentinels without a moment's hesitation but couldn't bring himself to tell Jean how he felt about her.
They sat there in silence for a few more minutes before Scott could finally bring himself to say something and even when he did it was almost a whisper.
"Jean?"
"Yeah Scott?"
"There was a reason why I wanted to bring you here tonight" he said as he struggled to contain the pounding in his chest. "That whole thing conflict with Apocalypse got me thinking about the things that are important to me and the things I couldn't bare losing. And I wanted to tell you something."
And in that caring, understanding voice of hers she replied "You know you could tell me anything Scott. I'm always here for you"
Those last few words were all it took to give him that last bit of courage he needed he needed. "I know Jean. And that's why I want you know that I am completely in love with you."
It only took a moment, but to him that moment seemed like a lifetime… And then he saw it. That smile that he fell in love with all those years ago.
"I love you too Scott" she replied. Then she laced her fingers in into his hands and brought her lips to his in a deep passionate kiss. And in that moment the rest of the world disappeared, and all that remained was the two of them.
