steps vanished and all that was left was the length of his shadow.
And even that too disappeared in the depths of the dark corridor.
The hallway was splattered with moonlight pushing past the curtains,
but her eyes still strained to see his form, relaxed, calm.
But she knew his posture lied; she knew his nails were digging into his palm, and his eyes were hardened with sorrow, and denial, and the wish that if he trained hard enough, shed enough blood for the both of them, this would be made right.
God knows, it felt right.
She knew that in the morning, he wouldn't mention it. She knew that he would ignore her, pass the honey with the usual lack of brushed fingertips. She knew that when he went away to train with her father, guilt would ride upon his shoulders along with his knapsack, and that he would say nothing.
She knew that in the evening he would come to sit in her mother's garden when she gathered herbs for her balms, and that he would pretend not to see her, but the rose bushes instead.
And she knew
that at night he would come to her again, and find her in the dark.
She knew he would love her, and she would cry against his chest with
happiness, grief, confusion, and with guilt.
