A/N: Written for the A Prompt Per Pokemon Challenge, Dragonair prompt A – nobility.

Taming Dragonair

It was a tradition that had been passed through their family for generations. Each member of the royal brood would go into the dragon's den and bring back a dragon. That was what made them the legendary dragon tamers of Blackthorn: the tamers whose Pokemon could control the weather and the tides of war.

And when it was her turn, she found a Dragonair immediately and knew that was who she had to tame, to catch. And it was a difficult task, because the Dragonair was far more well versed in battle than newly hatched Dratini, and even they harder to catch than the little Axew who ran about. But becoming a dragon tamer was more than just catching a dragon. It was about bonds, and every member of the royal family who had entered the cave had emerged only with that dragon they had bonded to.

It was a matter of their personal pride, as well as their nobility. Because the world wouldn't know that she'd bonded with a beautiful Dragonair if she walked out with a Dratini or an Axew. But she would, and she would always feel a failure because of it if she let herself.

She didn't. And she managed to walk out with that Dragonair in the end after all.
