AN: Written for the Great Maze challenge. My prompt was "Play exploding snap and hope something doesn't blow up in your face." Reviews are lovely!
"Oi, Evans!"
Lily sighed impatiently and turned to face James, who was grinning at her from across the room. "What do you want, Potter?"
"Want to play Exploding Snap?" he asked, holding up the deck of cards.
Lily rolled her eyes. "I'll give you two reasons why my answer is no. A, I have this lovely Transfiguration essay that's due tomorrow, and B, I have never and will never, in any way, desire your company."
"Ach, you know you love me, Evans," James said cheerily. "Besides, I am the king of Transfiguration. I'll help you write your essay."
"I have no faith in the reliability of that statement. Also, as stated before, I try to avoid you whenever possible. I'm certainly not going to start actively seeking your company."
"Why the lack of faith?" said James. "You know I'd do anything for you, darling."
"Oh, yes," said Lily. "In exchange for sexual favors, maybe."
James pressed his hand against his heart. "You wound me, Evans. I would never make such advancements upon your person in such an unromantic way. Trust me. There would be flowers involved. And candles. And symphony music."
Alice Longbottom, who was sitting at a nearby table, glanced up from the book she was reading. "Is James describing how he would seduce you again, Lil?"
"Indeed he is," said Lily. "It's quite revolting."
"Just play the stupid game with him so he'll shut up," said Sirius.
James grinned. "Well, Evans?"
"Oh, fine," she said, getting to her feet. "But you are not seducing me."
"No, I'm playing Exploding Snap with you," said James. "And then, once we're in such close proximity, huddled over playing cards, you're going to start to notice my stunning good looks. We'll attend a Hogsmeade weekend together, fall in love, get married, and have four gorgeous little Potter-Evans babies, with my fabulous hair and your gorgeous eyes."
"You sicken me," said Lily, sitting down across from him.
James spread out the cards. "That's what they always say, Evans."
"Yes, yes," said Lily. "Although I must admit, you do have pretty good hair."
James' fingers slipped, and Lily darted out, tapping the cards quickly before they could explode.
"Did you just compliment me, Evans?"
"Maybe," said Lily. "Although babies don't usually have much hair, Potter, so I sort of doubt that the wonderful Potter-Evans babies will have yours." She tapped all of the cards again while James stared at her.
"Lily Evans is talking about having babies with me. I think someone needs to make a note of this day on the calendar."
Lily arranged the next set of cards. "Tell me, Potter, do you prefer a June wedding or a September one?"
"I have given serious thought to this," said James, "and I have decided that our wedding should take place in early summer, when all the lovely flowers are blooming."
"Like the lilies?"
"Precisely."
"Your turn."
James laid out the cards.
"And, of course, Sirius can be your best man. And a honeymoon at the seaside, perhaps?" said Lily, her green eyes glittering.
This time, the cards exploded, singing James' eyebrows clean off.
Lily stood up, grinning. "I believe that is a win for me. Furthermore, for the record, I am not going to marry you, nor will there be any Potter-Evans babies, summer weddings, or seaside honeymoons in our future."
James rubbed at the spot where his eyebrows had been. "You're a sneaky one, Evans," he said. "I suppose that's why I am so desperately in love with you."
"By the way, you look ridiculous," said Lily. "Now come help me with that essay."
James got to his feet, a smile lighting up his face. "It would be my pleasure."
