...
Cody gave a bored sigh. He hated being left out of pack hunts just because he couldn't see, he was able to hear and smell just fine. But no, the pack leader insisted on waiting until he was a little older before he was brought on any large hunts. The little hunter gave a shiver; it was still very cold, cold enough for there to be a small layer of snow on the ground.
Suddenly he was wrapped up by a warm tongue, lifted up and placed on a familiar pair of slender shoulders. "They just left you here alone? Dammit, Jack can really be inconsistent at times. Doesn't want you on big hunts so you're safe, and then just leaves you alone."
"Danny!" The young hunter hugged the back of the smoker's head. The two may not have been blood related but they had formed a brother-like bond having both gone through a similar ordeal at the same lab. Now Danny tends to look after and take care of the kid like an older brother, and Cody looks up to and adores the smoker like they've always been family.
Danny adjusted the scarf he'd found so that it also went around Cody as well, the poor kid felt really cold. "So I was thinking" Danny began "maybe it won't be a type of hunt the others go on yet but how about we go hunt an animal like a deer or something?"
The young hunter grinned with delight. He liked getting treated like an actual hunter, the lack of sight just helped to increase his senses for hearing and smell. "Yeah! And I can hunt it on my own?"
"Well I'll be close in case you need help but sure!" the smoker laughed a little when Cody hugged the back of his head. Coughing a little Danny walked further into the woods looking for animal tracks to follow.
After about an hour of searching Danny spotted a young doe sniffing around in the thin layer of snow. "Alright Cody" Danny quietly whispered to the young hunter as he picked him up off his shoulders and placed him down. "There's a doe-a female deer- a few feet straight ahead in front of you. I'll stay here ready to help but this one looks like one you could do, just pay attention to the sounds and you'll do fine."
The hunter child nodded, sniffed around and listened for the doe before quietly making his way closer to it. As he got closer he had to stop a few times and listen to make sure he could still hear it, and once he got close enough he leaped at where he smelled it digging his claws in. Immediately the doe started to buck trying to get the little hunter off but he held on using his claws and teeth.
After a while Cody made his way clawing up to the doe's neck and kept biting until it went down. Giving a few more slashes just to make sure, he sat on the corpse, satisfied.
Danny walked up and patted Cody on the head. "You're like a pro hunter already!"
The little hunter grinned up at the smoker. "Thanks Danny!"
The two didn't let the hunting practice deer go to waste.
