"Girlfriend? No, not really my area." That wasn't always true. Sherlock's wife died due to complications in childbirth - something practically unheard of in twenty-first century London – and he was left to raise their daughter. Completely AU, starting from A Study in Pink but from Sherlock's point of view.

Disclaimer: I don't own anything, except perhaps for Elvira.

Sherlock Holmes was woken up in the same way he was every morning; by his two month old daughter's cries. Elvira woke up every morning, without fail, at six, after waking up several times during the night.

With a groan, Sherlock glanced at the clock momentarily – more out of habit than anything else – and got out of bed. Ellie probably wanted feeding. Her cot was at that point in time situated at the bottom of the bed, surrounded by boxes and the general clutter that had always accumulated around her father.

On closer inspection, not only was the infant hungry, but she had also kicked off her blankets. Again. Sherlock couldn't help but smile; he'd always kicked off the blankets as well. Elvira "Ellie" Holmes was flailing her tiny little limbs in frustration. How awful it must be to be a baby, thought Sherlock as he reached down to pick her up. Having to scream for everything and not being able to tell people what's wrong.

Ellie's sobs subsided a little as she rested her head against Sherlock's shoulder, but they didn't go away completely until he had heated a bottle for her.

Initially, Sherlock was certain that he wouldn't be able to raise a child on his own, and there had been a few rough nights where he thought he wouldn't be able to cope anymore, but as he looked down at the little gurgling, babbling form lying in his arms, he wondered how he ever lived without her.

So what did you think of this little taster of what's to come? I'll update as frequently as possible, but I have a seriously busy schedule between school and studying. Please, take a moment to review. I don't mind if you didn't like it, but no flames please.
