Jellicle Cats Are Black and Gold

She pretended she hated him. She was used to it – she had acted under this façade all her life. But now it was more important than ever.

He always tried to flirt with her, of course – he did that to any queen who came his way – but she had to resist. It was a difficult thing to do, but she succeeded. It was all part of keeping up appearances.

The older Jellicles – Jellylorum (her mother), Jennyanydots, Skimbleshanks and Asparagus Jr. – all figured she was too intelligent to succumb to the charms of such a pretentious tom. How sadly were they mistaken.

Well, it wasn't that she wasn't as intelligent as they thought she was; in fact, she was probably more so. It was just that he was so different when he was around her. It was like he was two completely different cats. Sure, he was an irrepressible flirt at any given moment, which somehow attracted the queens and queenkits like magnets. But when he was with her, he was quite…normal. He wasn't the least bit conceited or egotistic. He was a gentle, caring, loving cat. He was kind and treated her right. He treated her with real, proper respect.

She loved their conversations, and the way he would use his hidden intelligence to challenge and improve hers, as she did to him. He made her feel wanted and loved, and she wanted and loved him.

She also loved the way their fur complimented each other's. It was like the Everlasting Cat had given them the same coloured coats to prove just how compatible they were and that they belonged together. She smiled as she thought of his fur next to hers: black and gold. Perfect together, perfect for each other.

"Demeter?"

She looked up. There he was: her love.

He sat down beside her and slid his arm around her waist. "I love you."

Demeter smiled and rested her head on his shoulder. "I love you, too, Tugger."
