Standing a Chance

Sillabub watched sadly as Mistoffelees, in turn, sadly watched Victoria and Plato together. It was common knowledge amongst the kittens that Mistoffelees was desperately in love with his kithood best friend, Victoria, but she loved and was mated with Plato, arguably the strongest and most handsome of the younger toms.

Sillabub's eyes wandered momentarily to the happy couple, before returning her attention to Mistoffelees. She sighed. It was true: she was in love with the magical, tuxedo tom; but she knew that she didn't stand a chance against Victoria. The pretty, white queen was too talented and attractive for any toms not to notice her before they noticed someone less striking, such as Sillabub.

A tear slowly made its way down Sillabub's cheek. She and Mistoffelees both looked quite the pictures of dejection and misery. Both had their ears and tails drooping, and their eyes were full of sadness.

The young queen kept her eyes trained on her love as he wandered away from the heart-breaking scene. When he was out of sight, the queen let her gaze blur as she stared into the distance.

Soon she was aroused from her thoughts by a male voice.

"Sillabub?"

The queen looked up and blinked. "Hi," she said quietly.

"You're looking very pretty today."

Sillabub blushed under her fur as Mistoffelees sat down beside her. "Thanks." Maybe she had a chance afterall…
