Demeter's Fear
The beating drum of my heart slowly intensified as I warily watched the oven door gradually creaking open. The shadows that had been hidden before now swooped down, screeching loudly, clawing for my heart which was steadily choking me of all breath. This darkness entered my body, filling my mind with black thoughts, blinding my eyes with terror. A scream ripped my lungs apart, piercing in the silent junkyard. My eyes wrenched open, as I saw without seeing the den in front of me. Concerned, strong hands tried to comfort me from my fears. Whimpering, I slowly stood, collapsed and crawled towards the gaping mouth of gloom, filled with the night. I banished my fears with a slam and a shudder, scuttling quickly back to the safety and warmth of my anxious, worried mate. I dared not look out at my nightmares. I dared not face my fears. I dared not look past my terror and dread. I allowed myself just one word. "MACAVITY"
