...The End...

For it being the end of the world, it was one of the most beautiful days Dean had ever seen. He passed Cas a beer as the sun blazed down upon them. They were pulled over just outside Lawrence, knowing that once they entered the city they wouldn't be coming back out. Dean thought it was kinda funny and ironic that they ended up going back to where it all started. Cas didn't find it funny at all, seeing as Lucifer had killed everyone in that city.

In the end everyone had betrayed them. Dean knew it would happen, deep down he had always known. Nothing good ever came to the Winchester's. The only thing he had left was Cas. Sam...Sam was gone. Dean prayed that his soul was in heaven, but he knew where his body was. Sitting in their childhood home was Sam, with Lucifer calling the shots.

Dean looked over to Cas. He was still so very human, but he had grown as a hunter, which made him proud. Cas glanced up and Dean quickly turned away. He kicked at the dirt beneath his shoes and held in a sigh. There was so much he needed to say that would have to go unsaid. There was no time left. He bit the inside of his cheek and stared hatefully down at the ground.

"So..." Dean started. "So when this is all over, you wanna go out?"

He heard Cas huff a laugh, he could almost see the smile and how his eyes would close and little laughter lines would appear. .

"Yeah, it's about time," Cas sighed.

"Alright. When we win I'll take you somewhere nice." Dean told him, then coughed to cover his voice breaking. "It's a date."

"Can't wait." Castiel's voice quivered, there were tears in his eyes that he refused to let fall.

Dean turned away, not letting Cas see his own tears that were streaming down his face. He threw his beer bottle into the street and watched it shatter into a million pieces. He clenched his jaw and willed himself to stop crying. He wiped his face and pulled himself together. Without looking at Cas he got in the Impala and slammed the door shut.

Castiel let his bottle fall to the ground with a thud. His chest ached with a feeling he would never be able to quell. He stared at the broken glass in the road until he was strong enough. He walked slowly to the passenger side door. Before getting in he looked back. The sky behind them was blue and before them only darkness. They could run, but that's not how this story ends.

Cas sat down and Dean stared out the window.

"Dean..."

"Don't." Dean's voice broke. "Don't tell me anything until our date. Okay?" Dean tried to smile at the man next to him.

"Okay," Cas agreed with soft sadness in his voice.

The Impala roared to life and Dean sped into the city. It wasn't that he was going to die, Dean always knew he would die trying to save his brother, it was the regret that was killing him, Castiel felt the same bitterness.

The remorse of never reaching out to take the others hand, when it would have been taken and held so sweetly.
