Rin Hawke twisted the lock and it clicked. Tears ran down the rogue's face.
"Damn it," she muttered, her back against the door, her face buried in the crook of her arm as they rested, crossed, on her knees.
Her mother was dead, just like Carver and her father.
She could hear the rain pelt the window, the fire crackle in the fireplace, but it seemed distant to her.
Rin was cold, her skin tingled. Her mind spun and her eyes hurt. Her hands were stained with blood and ached from how hard she had gripped her daggers. But however much she hurt, she ignored it.
The door knob twisted and she raised her head. There was a knock.
"Hawke," a familiar voice called.
"Go away," she replied.
"Hawke, I know nothing can make this better for you, but if you wish to talk, you know where to find me." the person told her. She heard footsteps fading and stood, unlocking the door. Rin pulled it open and stepped out.
"Fenris, wait," she called. The elf turned and faced her. "I...do think I need to talk." He walked back to her and she beckoned him to her room. It was silent as she closed the door and sat on the bed. He sat next to her, not speaking.
"I was too slow," Rin finally spoke, looking into the flames of the fire. "If I had been quicker, I could have saved her." she paused. "Varric told me it wasn't my fault, and so did Aveline, but it is."
"It was not," Fenris assured her.
"But it is," she argued, she hung her head in her hands. "I promised myself after father died I would take care of my family and protect them. I failed with Carver, I failed with mother. Hell, I even failed with Bethany, she should not be in the circle." she took a deep breath. "I just...I feel horrible, and alone."
She felt a hand on her shoulder. Rin raised her head and looked over at him.
"I do not know what to tell you, Hawke," he admitted. "But I am here if you need me." he raised a hand and wiped the tears from her face. She blinked.
"Thank you, Fenris," she whispered, giving her friend a hug. "Your a really good friend to me."
Rin rest her head on his shoulder and felt a hand run through her hair. She smiled, closing her eyes. She could hear the beat of his heart, his every breath, and it calmed her.
It was silent for a few moments.
"Why don't you sleep?" Fenris suggested. She raised her head.
"Alright..." she trailed off, biting her lower lip.
"What?" he asked.
"I...well, uh, would you stay? Tonight, I mean." she managed. "It would make me feel a bit better," she explained quickly.
"I will, if you wish." he told her.
"Thank you," she said as she laid on her bed. He laid down next to her as she closed her eyes. In moments, sleep claimed her.
