Why Don't You Stay?

When Mr. Shuester holds an open mic songfest one Friday afternoon, no one expects Noah Puckerman to be the first to take the stage; but he does. Acoustic guitar in hand, head down, and stool at the ready. To the fellow glee clubbers, he looked like a man with a story to tell, and really he was.

He calmly puts the mic in a stand, nodding at one of the band crew for setting one up for his guitar, and picks a couple strings with a heavy sigh. The auditorium feels hollow and Puck can't help but feel scared. He looks up and glazes over the faces of the people he shares his awful school with, before stopping on a pair deep brown eyes seemingly staring through him.

He looks down, gathering his courage before he loses it. "I wanna sing something to somebody who really needs to hear it." His fingers nervously pluck a few strings, voice shaky. "It's called 'Stay,' by Sugarland."

He hums a note, picking the strings appropriately before beginning.

I've been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall
And I've been laying here praying, praying she won't call

*Puck lay on his bed, arms wrapped around a pillow, body wrapped up in the arms of the man he loves. He smiles, feeling sated and complete in this moment of happiness. His lower half twinges with effort when he shifts to snuggle further, but it's a delicious ache to have. It reminds him of the wonderful events that just transpired.

He moans when large hands run down his flank from their resting place on his hip, making his head fall back slightly as the hand becomes arms pulling him backward and upward into a kiss. He smiles, resting against the headboard, practically sitting in his lover's lap, trading lazy smooches.

Noah glances over at his desk alarm clock, as a wet trail is starting down his neck, he gasps in pleasure, then bites his lip in sadness… it's almost six o'clock.

Tears begin to gather as he's flipped over effortlessly, and a hard, large body settles between his legs. A mouth is taking his nipples and calloused fingers are dancing patterns across his stomach. He closes his eyes, moaning and groaning from the onslaught of sensation, pleading inwardly six o'clock never comes.

…but just like every time they are together it does. And the mouth, fingers, and body move to pick up a cell phone alerting of a text message from…

"It's Rachel," Finn says needlessly, looking almost bashful.

It's just another call from home
And you'll get it and be gone
And I'll be crying

Noah squeezes his eyes shut cursing his fucking tears. He opens them, putting on a mask of indifference. "Figured."

Finn comes back over to the bed, acting as if he doesn't know if he's welcome to sit. Noah wants to say he isn't, but he can't when the older man looks at him like that. That apologetic look, cause it's usually when he'll say… "You know this is only temporary, right?"

And his faith in whatever it is that they have, is restored. "Yeah, course." And Noah hopes that's more convincing than it sounds to him.

Finn smiles and bends to give him one last kiss before walking out the door without another glance back. And Noah's thankful, because then Finn would see the hopeless tears streaming down his face.*

There's a collective gasp, everyone looking to the other wondering who the words may be for. All except for one Finn Hudson. He sits in the row next to his girlfriend Rachel, hand securely wrapped around hers, face as red as a tomato.

Noah just continues to strum, humming out the melody perfectly. Doing everything he can to not look up at the face of the man he hopes is listening.

And I'll be begging you, baby
Beg you not to leave

*"Finn?" he says hesitantly one afternoon, trying to sound normal as he slices some vegetables for stir fry. His mom invited the Hudmels for dinner, and given that he loves to cook, he's making the meal. In all honesty, he was surprised to see how easily everyone got along. It warmed his heart…and then tugged at it because he knows this isn't the kind of family get together he wants to be having.

Where he introduces Finn to his mom for the first time as his boyfriend, not just his long time friend.

Finn just hums, focused entirely on reading some recipe in a cookbook. Distantly Noah hears Kurt laugh and smiles. Yeah, it would be nice if he had a brother. But at the moment he only wants to be able to get Finn to stay over. In the past month, every time he suggests they go back to his house after school, Finn always says he's got something planned. Well there's no way he could tonight. Rachel didn't come, and he would have had to tell her that his family would meeting Puck's, so he's without any reason to say no.

"I was thinking," he says with a confident grin, raising his head to look over at the intently reading lover of his. "That maybe we could like, I dunno – make a night of this?" He hid his nervousness by finding the sudden need to scrub his hands under the sink water extremely important.

Finn stiffened, "Umm, well, babe I would but-…"

But I'll be left here waiting
With my Heart on my sleeve

Puck took his turn to stiffen, bracing himself for the excuse he knew was about to come.

"I told Rachel I'd take her to a movie tonight."

Letting the water run, he stopped all movement before looking over at the paler boy, eyes shining. "Well can't you just say you're sick from the fucking food I made, and do it tomorrow?" He knew he sounded desperate, but he really didn't care. Finn was slipping through his fingers. He turned off the tap, leaning back against the sink and crossing his arms over his chest almost in defense. "We haven't, like, done anything in weeks, man!"

Finn looked over at his lover in regret. "I'm sorry, baby, you know that." He comes over to hug Noah to him – defensive arms and all. "Rachel's just really clingy right now."

The olive skinned boy chuckled hollowly, "It's because she wants you to fuck her, dumbass." Then pulls away to finish chopping.

"Which isn't going to happen, Puck," Finn says with surety, placing his hand in center of his boyfriend's still back. "You know that." Finn gets a goofy smile and runs his finger lightly though Noah's mohawk, "My cock belongs to you," he giggles.

Noah growls, suddenly angry and turns around to push him away. "Yeah, but nothing else does." He grumbles and goes to the fridge to pull out some more food.

The tall boy draws his brows together. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Puck spins with a look of rage. "She has you in all the ways that matter, Finn. I'm just your kept boy!"

Finn shushes him; reminding Puck they weren't alone which serves to only piss him off more. He continues in a stage whisper, "You keep me around cause I give you the option for the best of both worlds. A pretty bitch to brag to your parents about and walk around school with and take on dates…and a desperate boy you can fuck into any given flat surface whenever you want without any attachments."

Finn takes his turn to scowl. "That isn't true, Puck!"

"The hell it isn't." He challenges and goes back to chopping furiously after slamming the fridge door closed, ignoring the tears gathered in his eyes.

Oh, for the next time we'll be here
Seems like a million years
And I think I'm dying

After a few moments he can't anymore and puts down the knife to start full on crying, the first time he's ever done so in front of Finn. So the said boy wasn't sure what to do, Noah just shakes his head a minute later.

"Just go into the living room, Finn." He sniffles and starts to shakily start chopping again.

Finn shakes his head hopelessly, "Noah, baby," he starts. The guitarist doesn't turn around just continues to sniffle. "This won't be like this forever. After high school we'll be together for real." He comes up behind him and wraps his arms around his waist, doing a quick check to make sure no one sneaked up on him. He sighs in relief. "Soon we won't give a crap about what anyone thinks."

Noah scoffs, turning around staring at his lover with red eyes. "It's only ever been you that does, Finn."*

What do I have to do to make you see
She can't love you like me?

Puck asks the question with such hurt in voice, everyone in the audience stopped caring about whether or not the song was about a boy or girl. They were watching Puck slowly fade before their eyes, showing a vulnerable side he's never shown before. Kurt looks over at Mercedes who has tears in her eyes and takes her hand. He can't help that sad stories make him cry.

Noah looks up with tears in his eyes, letting them spill over silently.

Why don't you stay?
I'm down on my knees
I'm so tired of being lonely
Don't I give you what you need?
When she calls you to go
There is one thing you should know
We don't have to live this way
Baby, why don't you stay?

*There riding the bus to Sectionals, and Puck hasn't taken the earbuds out of his for the duration of the entire ride. The compact space was filled with joyous laughter, singing, and couples snuggling. It was all sickeningly sweet and churned his gut. Everyone was happy with the one they loved. Everyone except for him.

Because the one he loved was sitting next to another person that loved him, and Puck wasn't it.

Rachel.

Rachel Fucking Berry.

He looks over at them with sorrow filled eyes. Her face was lit up like a Menorah and while Finn may not look quite as excited, he certainly wasn't depressed. No. That was for Noah Puckerman. He slides down a little bit more on his bench seat and looks out the window. The worst part really was Puck couldn't hate her.

Rachel had no idea he was in love with her perfect boy. She had no idea that Finn was promising he'd leave her when they graduated and run off with him to Ohio State. She had no idea that Noah died slowly everyday knowing that the chances of that fantasy coming true were slipping farther and farther away. She had no idea that Finn wasn't what he said he was.

He sighed heavily. Shaking his head, closing his eyes, breathing in and out, those were the only thing of comfort to Noah anymore.

You keep telling me, baby
There will come a time
When you will leave her arms
And forever be in mine
But I don't think that's the truth
And I don't like being used and I'm tired of waiting

When they arrive at their destination, Puck is slow in leaving the bus. He's tired more often than not, and it didn't help that he and Finn fucked pretty hard the night before leaving him incredibly sore. This thought makes him cringe. Their lovemaking isn't even loving as of late. Noah is always left feeling as though Finn is holding something back, or not telling him something. It's rushed and frantic…he doesn't even hear his name on the older boy's lips anymore.

As he steps off the bus he doesn't think his abused heart can take anymore torture when he sees Rachel pull Finn aside, whispering. But he's close enough to hear the words and it's enough to make Noah go sit back on a bench seat to collect himself.

"Meet me in the family restroom. We have unfinished business from this morning."

The tears start unbidden. And the guitarist wipes them away enraged. All he fucking does is cry! Finn promised. He promised him he wasn't…but he was. He fucking was fucking her.

"Fuck!" he growls and punches the seat next to him.

Then he curls up in a ball, holding his stomach and sobs his heart out. The others won't miss him for a few minutes, he has time. And all he wants to do is go crawl in a hole.*

Noah pointedly looked at the wall, resisting looking to the one he wants to hear the next words.

It's too much pain to have to bear
To love a man you have to share

Why don't you stay?
I'm down on my knees
I'm so tired of being lonely
Don't I give you what you need?
When she calls you to go
There is one thing you should know
We don't have to live this way
Baby, why don't you stay?

Noah looks up finally at Finn, silently begging him to remember with him their love. To not choose fucking Rachel, to run down the stage and kiss him in front of everyone, to tell everyone he loves him! But Puck isn't completely stupid just stupidly in love with someone who can't own up to it.

So he stands with his guitar, almost knocking the second mike over, singing with renewed fervor.

I can't take it any longer
But my will is getting stronger
And I think I know just what I have to do
I can't waste another minute
After all that I've put in it

He starts crying again with his next lyrics, feeling the question in his soul.

I've given you my best
Why does she get the best of you?

*"Puck?" Finn's voice asks the hollow feeling bedroom. "Baby?"

So next time you find you wanna leave her bed for mine

Noah flinches from his spot laying on his bed.

His lover walks further into the room, noticing the staleness of the air and the clothes the olive skinned boy was wearing. "Have you seriously not left that spot since we got back two days ago?"

Noah doesn't respond. Finn sits on the edge of the bed. "Baby?" he shakes his shoulder to no avail. The older man sighs, dropping his hands heavily into his lap.

Why don't you stay

"I came by because I was worried about you, Babe. You didn't say anything to me at Sectionals, and you never called to say you were alright after we got home."

Puck does look over at him then, eyes glassy from tears. Calmly he asks, "And why the hell would you do that? Need a sexual fix?" Noah feigns remembering something. "Oh, wait," he coughs, sitting up, "I forgot. You've got Rachel for that now, silly me!" he sounds almost hysterical.

Leaning back as if burned Finn splutters, "What?"

Noah just scoffs. "Cut the crap, it's really pissing me off."

I'm up off my knees
I'm so tired of being lonely
You can't give me what I need

He growls and pushes to stand on shaky legs, holding his stomach as he falls backward, muttering, "Shit."

Finn pushes off to see if he's alright, but puck just shoves him away. "Don't you fucking touch me, Hudson."

"What the hell is your problem?" Finn says with confusion.

"YOU FUCKING FUCKED HER, YOU SON OF A BITCH!" He screams, not caring who hears him, he's too emotionally tired. "Or have you forgotten somehow?" He challenges, and tries to stand unsteadily.

Finn makes to protest, "DON'T talk to me. You lost all rights to talking to me the moment you dipped your wick in her pussy and I had to find out myself. Get the fuck out of my house!"

"No, because that isn't what happened!" The other boy says. "You don't understand, I-…"

"You fucking promised me, Finn." Puck cries miserably, cutting him off. "You promised me it wouldn't happen! You promised me you loved me!" He sobs suddenly, falling against a wall. "If you love me, why are you with her? Why am I not enough for you?" Then out of nowhere, the truth he had been hiding for a month, waiting for the right time to say just spills out. "I'm pregnant, Finn."

Finn stops completely to look at him, waiting for the punch line that never comes. Finn gasps, stepping back. "What?"

"I said I'm pregnant dumbass!" he snaps and stands up to go into his ensuite bathroom pulling out some pamphlets, throwing them at him. "These might be helpful explaining how, cause I won't be to you."

Finn just stares at them in disbelief. "We're…having a baby?" It isn't even a question.

Noah scoffs, "No I am," he corrects making Finn look over, panicked. "You won't be in its life unless you tell me right now You. Love. Me. You. Choose. Me. That tomorrow when we go to school, I'm going to be the one making out with you in the hallways, I'll be the one wearing your letterman jacket, since I had to quit the football team, I'll be the one sitting with you at lunch…that I'll be your boyfriend for real!"

His lover's eyes narrow. "Did you fucking do this on purpose?" And the barb hurts more than he wants to admit.

"Why the hell would I let myself get knocked up on purpose, Finn?" he asks angrily, pain shooting through his heart at the accusation.

"To get me claim you in front of everyone." His eyes narrow dangerously, making Noah's stomach bottom out. "How do I even know it's mine?"

The punch comes to an expectant Finn. He simply turns his head with the blow, shaking his head miserably before turning to leave the room.

Noah's never felt so betrayed and alone his entire life.*

When she begs you not to go
There is one thing you should know
I don't have to live this way
Baby, why don't you stay, yeah

After the end of the performance, everyone collectively stands to applaud, but Puck tunes them out. All he can focus on is how Finn left the room, and how much his soul is crushed by this, and how his hand unconsciously strays to rub his belly uncertainly. He turns away from the people and leaves the room too. Maybe being alone actually is better, because then at least he doesn't have to pretend he's alright.
