"Is that a piano?" Dana stared in amazement at the small upright wooden piano that was cluttered with documents of UFO sightings and top secret information.
Mulder looked up from the computer he was working at and her heart melted. His hair looked so soft and it caught the light magnificently with one strand hanging over his forehead as usual. His glasses made his eyes shine and he seemed to look at the piano with longing. He immediately went back to his work after being caught off guard.
"Yeah, so?" he asked, attempting not to be distracted.
"I didn't know you played," Dana hinted. She didn't think of him at all as the musical type. He had always struck her as being the logical type. Not one to dabble in creativity.
"My mother taught me from a young age," he said with a smile, "I haven't played in a long time but I find it comforting to have a piano in the house. I don't know why."
"I always wanted to learn," confessed Scully as she tucked her hair behind her ear, also returning to her work, "I guess my parents always thought academic talent was more important."
There was a silence that seemed to last forever before Dana realised that her partner was not taking the hint at all, "Play something for me!"
Mulder looked up at her again with a confused expression, "Don't we have work to do, Agent Scully?"
"Please, Fox!"
She hadn't meant to use his first name. It slipped out before she could do anything about it, but it seemed to get his attention.
"First name?" He said sarcastically, "Things must be serious." Mulder sighed and stood up, "Fine."
He rolled up the sleeves on his shirt and began to shift the piles of junk and paper work that lay on the piano. Dana turned round in excitement and watched him as he lifted the cover to reveal the keys. He pressed one and screwed up his face disapprovingly, "It's pretty out of tune." He sat down on the stool and winked at her as he cracked his fingers.
Turning back to face the piano, it suddenly struck him that he had no idea what he was going to play. He thought for a moment as he felt his partner wait eagerly behind him.
"You like The Police, Scully?" he asked.
"The band or the law enforcement?" she replied with a laugh.
"The band," he giggled slightly.
"Yes," she answered honestly, "Why?"
He simply said, "Good," before he reached out and began to play. Dana recognised the song almost immediately. Did he know that it was one of her favourites or was it just a coincidence? As she pondered this, it suddenly occurred to her that he had started to sing, "Oh I've tried before to tell her of the feelings I have for her in my heart…"
She found his voice quite attractive at the best of times but she had never expected him to be able to sing so well.
"Every little thing she does is magic."
He made deep eye contact with her as he sung the chorus line and Dana felt as though he was singing directly to her. The cares and worries of her new assignment seemed to fade away and for that single moment she was at peace.
