Six-year-old Albus Dumbledore came sprinting into the room he and his brother Aberforth shared.
"Abe, Mummy's had the baby!" he proclaimed. "It's a girl, and Daddy says we can go to see her!"
Aberforth Dumbledore, his blue eyes sparkling, replied with "Come on then! I want to meet my little sister!"
The five and six-year-old boys then raced downstairs to where their father, Percival, was waiting for them. "You can go in, but she's very tired." he said.
With that, the young brothers burst into the room, where they saw their mother smiling beatifically at a small bundle in her arms. "Hello, my precious boys!" she greeted them. "Do you want to see little Ariana?"
As quiet as two little mice, the children crept over to their mother, and more importantly to them, the babe she was holding. Kendra Dumbledore offered them Ariana, and between them, they lifted her into their small arms. Stunned into silence, they stared at their beautiful baby sister. All was quiet, until Aberforth said, "I bet she'll say my name first."
"No way!" exclaimed Albus. "I bet she'll say my name first.
"Alright, what do you bet on it?"
"If I'm right, we get to hear 'The Tale of the 3 Brothers' every night."
"Well, if I'm right, when you're old, you'll have to have a beard long enough to tuck into your trousers!"
It was then that Kendra intervened. "Aberforth! Not that I'm happy with you betting at all, but where did you get that idea from?"
"Al's magic! Remember when he gave me that beard? Do you, Mummy?"
But his mother had fallen asleep. Realising she couldn't complain, Al and Abe shook hands and the deal was struck.
Many years later, after Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger had been through his bar to get into Hogwarts, an old and weary Abe tried to think of something good his brother had done.
When his beard popped into Abe's mind, he gave a ghost of a smirk. "You may have been dishonest as hell, Albus, but at least you kept that one promise." he muttered.
Up in heaven, Albus Dumbledore looked down at his brother and smiled.
