A/N: I ship this. Hate on me haters. You won't stop me.
Money was something Asami had, and she didn't mind putting it into causes like her favorite pro-bending team, or people who needed it more than she did. But she didn't want him to feel like a charity case, and there was a thin like between lending a hand and looking down on a guy who was poorer than her.
Really, all Asami wanted was more of a reason to spend time with Mako, and to get to know him better. He was the real deal, unlike most of the people she spent time with that were of her social class, who just seemed so fake. It frustrated the young woman, dealing with all of the "old money" elites, while she knew that her family was "new money" and thus weren't as included as others.
They all wanted her to be one of them, a girl who focused more on appearances than doing more good in this world. And, deep down, Asami knew she wasn't that. She enjoyed watching pro-bending matches, going over the numbers on the production of Satomobiles, and trying to find ways to go even faster. No one in her world understood that.
But Mako didn't seem to care about any of that. She was able to actually talk to him, which made her even happier to spend time with him. It was inevitable, she realized one night after a date, when she couldn't stop smiling. She was falling in love with him.
He wasn't her equal, not according to others in her social circle. But Asami didn't care about that. All that mattered was that he saw her, not her money. That he saw the girl who still missed her mother, who loved to cheer for her favorite teams, who hated to be seen as a doll. The Asami that she was when she was with him, her father, or all by herself, not the mask she wore in social events.
That was all she wanted.
