What is the World Coming To?
"What is the world coming to?" sobbed Molly Weasley, as the caskets of her two brothers were lowered into the ground.
"Mummy, why are you crying?" asked Fred, who, at that time, had no idea what was happening.
"It will be alright," said George, who, like Fred, had no idea what was happening.
"Mum…" said Bill, who was looking around at the people who were crying, but yet still being able to stare at Molly, who was sobbing harder than anybody at the funeral.
"Mama, what happen?" asked Ron as loose soil was shoveled over the graves
Molly only sobbed harder. "I always thought that everybody would be ok…"
"Mummy everybody will be ok" said George. If only he knew how incorrect he was.
"Mum, let's go home," said Bill after a long silence in which all the other guests had departed.
Arthur put an arm around his wife, and together the family of nine began to walk slowly back to their house, where Molly's sewing needles were working on a humongous blanket with the words "Gideon and Fabian" across the front. When they got back, Arthur charmed the needles to stop sewing, knowing that they would never be able to put that blanket under the Christmas tree, knowing that Gideon and Fabian Prewett would exclaim over it in the morning. He went back to the kitchen where Molly was already making tea.
"Molly," he said, "go and sit down."
Molly only cried, pouring the tea into mismatching mugs.
Arthur went into the sitting room, where his children were assembled.
"They all look so sad, even though they can't comprehend that their uncles will never play Quidditch with them again, let alone play anything with them again," he thought as he looked around at them. "Someone has to cheer them up," he thought. He then realized with a pang that whenever the children were depressed, it was almost always Gideon and Fabian who would make them laugh. He sighed. "The pressure's on me now." Then he began to play chess with Charlie. But it was to no avail.
"I don't want to play chess, Daddy," said Charlie, "I want Uncle Gideon and Uncle Fabian."
"Uncle Gideon and Uncle Fabian are dead, you git," said Bill, who was twiddling a loose tassel from the threadbare carpet
Charlie, Percy, Fred and George all began to cry. Bill immediately began to look sad and guilty; he was that kind of person. But Arthur had had enough.
"Don't speak to your brothers that way!" he said sharply. "They don't need to be reminded, and frankly, neither do I!"
Bill began to choke back tears; his father had never spoken to him like that before.
Soon Arthur was choking back tears. The sight was not very pleasant for Molly when she came into the sitting room.
"Gideon and Fabian dead…." she said, setting the tea tray on the coffee table. Her eyes were red from tumultuous crying. "Oh, what is the world coming to….."
Of course, at that time, nobody really knew.
