"When saving for old age, be sure to put away a few pleasant thoughts." - Anonymous

Remember the first time he saw her? He had a visitor's pass and directions to Jimmy Deakin's office. She was in the squad room with an open file on her desk. Her pencil was tapping a rhythm to some obscure melody in her head. He only glanced her way for a moment. She didn't look up. He didn't know then, that she'd be the best thing that ever happened to him.

//

Remember when he discovered that his new partner, Detective Alex Eames, was a woman? He covered his discomfiture well, but she laughed at him anyway and told him to get over it. And he did.

//

Remember the first time they kicked down a door and cleared a house? He was relieved to see that she was professional and careful and brave.

//

Remember when she pointed out that she had more years on the job? He was puzzled that it had taken nearly a year for her to mention that she was senior.

//

Remember the first time she confided in him? She said the worst thing about having a husband and losing him is the every day regret after he dies; things you meant to say, things you meant to do. Bobby wonders what he will regret.

//

Remember the first time she stood across the desk from the Captain and lied to rescue her partner? She evaded and omitted and he was amazed by her loyalty and her trust.

//

Remember the first time he suggested that there was a cure for loneliness? She turned him down with a gentleness that made him grateful that she was his friend.

//

Remember all those stake outs? He thinks about all those hours spent waiting for something to happen. He thinks about the sound of her voice and way her laughter unwrapped his heart.

//

Remember the sound of gunshots and the smell of gunpowder? He thinks about how she fell, first backward and then sideways. He thinks about reaching out and catching her, but it's too late and she's too far away.

//

Remember the hospital gurney and the crowd of cops in the hallway? Bobby listens to the rhythm of the respirator and lists all the things he could have done differently ~ beginning with loving her and ending with never saying so.

Fin

This was written in a flash and is intentionally ambiguous at the end. I hope I adequately and accurately portrayed Bobby's feelings about Alex. Please let me know how you feel about this. - Dix.
