When Mousefur saw his body, she couldn't help but shriek in agony. His tabby pelt was matted with bark and he was unmoving. His body was crushed. As they dragged the limp form away, Purdy tried to console her, but it was useless. Her life was pointless without him. She sunk to the ground in defeat. She couldn't live without him always there to support her in her grumpiest times. She snapped, snarled, and growled at him, but he stuck by her side. That kind of friend is hard to find.
Mousefur walked around the camp aimlessly, having nothing to do but mourn. She used to fill her days by having conversation with him while she led him around. Her tail, which usually perched on his shoulder, now hung uselessly behind her. It seemed to have no purpose now. Purdy approached her with a vole, trying to persuade her to eat, but she simply turned and dragged herself to the Elders' Den. Cats tried to talk to her, to help her through it, but she rejected them. If one of them said even a word about it, she would hiss with extreme venom and march away. She couldn't handle this.
A moon later, her unusually frail body was curled in her nest. She didn't have the strength to move. Food had not been down her in days; she couldn't swallow without him there sharing the prey with her. Purdy had called Jayfeather in a panic and the medicine cat was now trying to force herbs down her, but, using her little remaining strength, she turned her head. Herbs meant life and life without him was impossible. With a hiss of frustration, the gray tabby tom began to growl the necessity of these plants, but his voice slowly drained from her ears. Her eyes felt heavy. Her dull orbs pleaded with Jayfeather; this was what she wanted. He sighed and bowed his head in acceptance. Purdy shouted some, but the medicine cat simply shook his head at the demands. Mousefur's eyes slowly slipped closed as she went into a long anticipated sleep.
As they slid open again, the first thing she saw was a pale tabby pelt with dark stripes. She gasped and rushed forward, feeling younger than she had in a long time. As their bodies brushed against each other, a rough tongue rasped along her ear. "It's good to see you, Mousefur."
She pressed her nose to his. "Longtail, I've missed you so much!"
"And I, you. Even with all the prey in Starclan, I've felt empty. Now I'm as full as the lake; overflowing actually," Longtail purred as he twined his tail with her's. "Now we are together for an eternity."
Mousefur purred loudly as they walked in the forest, greeting cats as they passed. In her years of a warrior, death was always feared; honorable if in battle, but feared. But death had saved her. She had been on the brink of insanity without him and death had brought them together. She didn't regret the last moon; it had all paid off. She was dead, she was with him, she was happy. Many thought death was sour and bitter, but this was sweet and delicious. Turning, Mousefur looked at his handsome face and his now-seeing eyes. Eternity. They would be together for an eternity. She smiled. She could live - or rather, die - with that.
