It had started when Roy was depressed. Ollie was out of town again, ignoring Roy per usual. The boy had wandered into a side ally and ran into someone who said they were selling 'relief' or something like that. He knew what they were really selling, but he didn't care, he was desperate for anything to get rid of the horrible loneliness he felt.
At first he used his immense bank account to buy it, just enough to keep him going. Eventually he had to limit how much he took out so Ollie wouldn't notice the unexplained outflow of cash.
So, he took the extra he needed from criminals. Just a little here and a little there, who would notice a little missing from a thief's stash or from a corrupt politician's payoff? It was easy, so he increased the amounts he took and was less careful. That was just another in a long line of mistakes and stupid moves.
Inevitably, Ollie found out. The man had kicked him out of the house without a second thought; Roy still had the bruises from that night. His friends didn't seem to care, not enough to try and help him. Blacklisted by the league, he slipped deeper into his habits.
That was when he had turned to crime. He had to pay for the stuff somehow. No one was going to offer him an honest job. Not as a hero and no one would hire a billionaire's disowned ward either.
Well, his first criminal job wasn't supposed to be that, and it wasn't, not really. He had attended a conference in Rulassia, and had ended up playing bodyguard for Lex Luthor. He had repeatedly turned down Luthor's attempts to pay him, but eventually he caved. After that he had taken other jobs, worse ones until a blurry gray became a very distinct black.
Roy wasn't stupid, he realized what had happened. He knew what he had ended up as. He knew somewhere deep down that there was nothing left for him now. Nothing left but the drug. It had completely taken over his life.
