Gibbs stood outside the hospice room staring through the window, He stared at the body of his best friend, His Abby, as she laid sleeping on the bed. He had gotten four more months with her before now. He could have had more if his fear hadn't caused him to force her away. For six months she lived with the knowledge that she was dying, almost completely alone. If Ducky hadn't been there to support her, He feared he wouldn't have had the four months he had been blessed with.

In the last two weeks he watched as she lost her ability to walk and her ability to speak, He watched as she was placed on machine after machine. His heart was breaking, He didn't want to watch her suffer anymore, but he couldn't walk away from her not ever again. The team, her only remaining family, had come to say their goodbyes. He watched it all from the hallway. She had slipped in an out of consciousness only waking long enough to sign she loved them to each one of them, before closing her eyes once again.

He tried to swallow the lump in his throat as he opened the door to her room and walked to her bedside. His hand clasped hers before leaning down to place a gentle kiss on her forehead, He felt a tear slide down his cheek and looked down as it dropped on to hers. His eyes met hers as she slowly opened them, She squeezed his hand at the tears she saw in his eyes. She withdrew her hand from his and brought her hand to her chest as she signed 'I'm Sorry'. He shook his head and leaned forward again to kiss her cheek "No Abbs, I'm sorry." She tried to shake her head but the ventilator prevented much movement, "I'll always be sorry that I wasn't there Abbs." she grasped his hand as she felt her self slip back to sleep.

He lowered himself into the chair next to her bed and watched her chest rise and fall and listened to the steady beep from the heart monitor. An hour later an alarm startled him out of his haze, Her heart rate was dropping. He bolted to his feet as a nurse rushed into the room and turned off the sound, He watched as the nurse checked her over before looking sadly at him. At the question he knew she could read on his face she nodded gently before walking slowly out of the room. He squeezed her hand as he watched her heart rate drop with each beat, He felt her hand move and looked down at her, her eyes looked directly into his. A tear slipped down her cheek as he reached up to wipe it away. He leaned close and whispered in her ear "Its OK Abbs, I'll Keep you safe." He felt her hand move in his making a familiar sign against his palm, He lowered his head to rest against hers. "I know, I love you too Abby." He looked back up into her eyes as her slowly began to close one last time. One final tear slid down her cheek, He knew the moment she was gone. He could almost see the light dim, He kissed her cheek one last time as tears fell freely down his face. He wasn't sure what to do as the nurses came in and turned off the machines, He knew he needed to call the team, so He looked back down at her before he carefully let go of her hand and turned and walked out of the room stopping one last time to look at Her, His Best friend, before heading out to tell their family that another piece of the family was gone.
