It was a school day afternoon in early Autumn. Outside the leaves on the trees were starting to turn and drop.
In the living room, Bo Peep ran to the coffee table. "Sheriff! Sheriff!"
Woody appeared from between the shiny brown oak legs. "Howdy, Little Missy," he drawled as he tipped his hat laconically. "What seems to be the trouble?"
Bo placed a hand over her heart. "My sheep have been stolen! You must save them!"
"Sheep rustlers!" The lanky Cowboy hitched his belt up dramatically as he spoke. "No doubt about it! It's the notorious Cactus Fred Gang!"
Bo paused. "'Cactus Fred'?"
"What? What's wrong with 'Cactus Fred'? I think 'Cactus Fred' sounds like an outlaw!"
"'Cactus' maybe,'" said Bo. "But 'Fred'?"
"I don't like the name 'Fred'!"
"Okay, fine. Cactus Fred stole my sheep," Bo said. She leaned forward and tapped him on the chest with her crook. "But what are you going to do about it?"
Woody walked forward a few paces. Suddenly, he dropped to the floor. "Rustler tracks!" He placed an ear on the carpet.
"What are you doing?"
"Listening for horses! Shhh, I can hear them! They're not too far ahead of us!"
Bo pulled him up. "Let's hurry!"
Hand in hand, the two toys ran across the living room to the orange recliner. Woody peeked into the dark shadowy crevice between chair and wall. "This cave must be Fred's secret hideout," he pulled down his hat. "Looks like I'm going in."
Bo grabbed his vest. "No Sheriff Woody! It's far too dangerous! You're outnumbered!"
"I have to! I took an oath to defend the law and bring bad guys to justice!" He placed his hands on Bo's shoulders and looked her in the eyes. "Just remember, if I don't come back…"
Bo placed a hand on his cheek. "Yes?" she said breathlessly.
"Don't let Jessie touch my stuff!" And with that he dove behind the chair.
There were scuffling noises. "Take that! And that! You want some of this?" Bo listened as the Cowboy made kicking and punching noises against the back of the recliner, all while shouting. "Trying to sneak up behind me, eh? Take this! Okay, I think you boys have had enough!" He emerged, Sheep in arms. "Woody saves the day again!"
"My hero!"
Woody set the flock down. "If there's anything else I can do for you, Little Missy…" Suddenly he was being tackled to the ground, Bo's crook flying through the air over his head as he was smooched. "Oof!"
Bo giggled as she covered his face with kisses. After a moment, she pulled back and they looked each other in the eye. That's when they broke, shaking with long, loud laughter.
There was a cough.
Looking up, they could see across the living room Buzz and Jessie watching. Buzz looked embarrassed. "I…uh…"
Woody sat up quickly. "How long have you been there?"
"Since 'I took an oath to defend the law.'"
The Cowboy looked exasperated. "Well?"
"Oh! We just, uh, came downstairs to…to…" Buzz ran to the bookshelf behind him and yanked something out. "To get this!"
"'Passing the California Real Estate Exam 1985 Edition'?"
Buzz frowned and put the book back on the shelf. "Maybe we better just go."
Jessie had been quiet the entire time and now as Buzz grasped her arm, she allowed him to lead her out of the living room. She was still staring over her shoulder as they vanished.
The door swung shut and Woody sighed...
Suddenly the door crashed back open and Jessie ran inside. "YOU TWO ARE THE CUTEST COUPLE I EVER SAW AND I'M SHIPPIN' YOU FOREVER!" Buzz's hand reached inside and grabbed her, pulling her back through the door. "Eep!"
Woody blinked. "What's that mean?"
Bo smiled and shook her head. "I have no idea."
