Just a little one shot that popped into my head. Scorpius was shouting at me to write it, the little bugger. Please enjoy. -smiles-
Everyone was surprised when Scorpius Malfoy was sorted into Ravenclaw. Despite the various attempts at changing the stereotypes, the views on Slytherin house remained strong, and there had never been a direct Malfoy who hadn't been sorted into the "most noble house." And with a family tree which traced back to the Book of Merlin, it was certainly noble indeed.
So no one could deny that when the Sorting Hat shouted out Ravenclaw, the smile on young Malfoy's face stayed strong, even when there was the slightest pause— just the slightest— before the other members started clapping.
Some of them, with the knowledge bestowed upon them by their great House, said, "Maybe he's different; maybe he's a Malfoy only in name." But others were blinded by the many facts before them. "His family history is strong. It takes more than just one boy to change that."
With the announcement, Scorpius Malfoy walked over and took the very first seat available, separated from the others.
"See," thought the blind, "he's a snob, doesn't want to be near the rest of us."
But inside Scorpius' head ran much different thoughts. Outside he was smiling, but inside, inside Scorpius wanted to cry. His eleven-year-old heart couldn't take it. He knew that he would be hated, no matter what House he was sorted into. He knew it, but he was still torn apart by their rejection.
'The rejection,' he told himself, 'Not theirs. It's not their fault for their thoughts.' So it was understandable that young Scorpius sat in the seat farthest away from people, stuck in the corner, not wanting to upset them any more than he already had.
He watched the other witches and wizards be sorted, one to Hufflepuff, two to Gryffindor, the rare one going to Slytherin. He smiled and applauded whenever one was sorted into Ravenclaw, but he couldn't help but notice how each new child took the seat farthest away from him, until only the seat directly to his right was open.
They had reached the final student, and Scorpius couldn't truthfully say that he paid attention to the name that was announced. He merely heard the traditional silence that came from the Sorting Hat, and then heard an unusually longer silence. All heads were turned towards the hat, where the little girl sat, eyes screwed shut and mouthing unintelligible words to the Sorting Hat, who wore a slight smile on his face.
"If you're sure of your reason," he said, and then bellowed "Ravenclaw!" at the top of his nonexistent lungs.
Scorpius clapped along with the rest of his house as the flaming red locks skipped down in the aisle. He put both hands at his side on the bench as he watched her reaction to having to sit beside him. She put one leg over the bench, then the other. Brushed a strand of hair out of her eye and pushed it behind her left ear. She twisted in her seat to glance up at him and, with a grin, proudly announced herself. "Hello Scorpius Malfoy, I'm Rose Weasley." She covered his right hand with both of hers and leaned towards him, with the air of telling a giant secret.
"And we are going to be the best of friends."
