Ryan drops the nearly empty bowl of candy back on the entrance way table and shuffles back into the living room. The Shining is on the television, paused on a shot of Jack Nicholson hunched over his typewriter, and Ryan tosses his Zorro hat at Esposito. "Next time, you're getting the door."
Esposito munches some candy he pilfered from the bowl, careful not to smear chocolate on his old uniform from when he was a beat cop. "Your apartment, bro. I'm just here to keep you company, remember?"
Ryan rolls his eyes and plops down on the couch next to him, scooting closer when Esposito drapes an arm around his shoulders. He snags a bite of Esposito's candy bar, ignoring Esposito's indignant 'Hey!' "You offered to help with the trick or treaters," he points out. "So far you've just sat on the couch eating twizzlers and anything with a nougat filling. And would it have killed you to put some effort into your costume?"
"First of all, this is a classic, authentic costume, which is more than you can say about yours," Esposito says, tugging at the edge of Ryan's polyester mask. "Second, I didn't say I'd help with the trick or treaters. I said I'd help you with trick or treating."
"What's the difference?" Ryan shoots Esposito an exasperated look as he pushes his mask back into place.
"Well, which do you want?" Esposito asks. He leans over the arm of the couch, grabs a bottle of chocolate syrup, and tosses it in Ryan's lap, then unhooks his handcuffs from his belt and holds them up with a grin. "A trick or a treat?"
Ryan hooks his index finger in one of the cuffs and tugs lightly, his answering smile as wide and toothy as a jack-o-lantern's. "Why not both?"
