I could be doing something more productive right now...but I'll rather just sit here and write. I'm telling you, BKO is my new muse.

This what Marno's thinking at the end of Baten Kaitos.

Disclaimer: Don't own.

Chained

As the blade is driven through his chest, he thinks he sees his face echoed in that of the man's.

The last time he saw him, before he was taken away by the Gods, he was tall and slender and blue-haired, passing fair to look at.

They had met for the first time in Hassaleh when he was only a child, under the light of a full moon, and despite the years the two spent together later in life, his favourite memory of him forever remained the moment he had given him a choice between his heart or his own, face lit, showing nothing but trust.

He reaches now for that phantom hand, trembling slightly with the effort. The Bethren will never be released after this – the man will survive; that much his precognition tells him – but then that was never really his goal. To see him one final time was all that ever mattered, and there he stands now, if he could just stretch his weakening fingers to touch his...

There are other humans (he notes Melodia's with them) there but they are not important. Shadows grow and converge on the edges of his vision, but they aren't important, either.

He sees only his original host. He needs to reach him, to feel the warmth return to his skin and the breath return to his body, needs to know that he has not given himself in vain. He needs him.

"... Stay," he finally mouths, lips dyed black with inky blood. "Stay with me awhile." He knows, of course, that his host and the rest can only hear the weakly cries of a monster.

A monster. He'd turn into a monster for him.

The rest speak, meaningless phrases that are unimportant until one starts reciting a prayer. 'No! Not yet! Give me more time!' He cries, of course he cries, because he knows this is the last time they will see each other and as he loses the last pieces of himself he reaches for him one last time.

"Sagi..."

And then the shell that has kept him tethered for thousand years explodes, and he is gone.
