"Look, Rin - I can't do this anymore," he said.
Len had his keys in one hand and jacket in the other, staring back from where he stood in the hallway.
She was bent over on the first step of the staircase, trembling, struggling to keep in the obnoxious sobs that shook her body. The tears kept falling and falling, nonstop, a cascade of fear and hopelessness and grief.
He turned on his heel to walk towards the front door, and she spoke up, her tongue heavy in her mouth.
"You always do this. You always give up and run when anything - anything gets too difficult."
Len froze in place, his lips parting to counter her response. "Rin -"
"Don't." She lifted her head from her hands, glaring up at him through her tears. "Don't do this to me. Remember all the times? Remember all those times I never gave up on you, no matter how difficult it was? How is this any different? How?"
He stared for a while, silent.
Rin looked back, begging, begging - all for nothing, it was all for nothing, right?
Eventually, Len sighed, the keys crunching in his hand.
"I'm sorry," was all he could say.
Then he turned and left, and she sat there in the cold, dark hall, wishing it was all but a bad dream, and when she'd wake up, he'd be there next to her.
