Author's Notes: I had an assignment to write a poem using the voice of a famous person or a character from a book/movie/game. I chose Reeve Tuesti, and I am kinda happy with how the poem ended up turning out. I had to even research him so that the professor would have something to draw from for the grading.

Night Sky Over Midgar

I remember what it was like

when you could see

stars

filling the sky,

a slash of whites, yellows, oranges splashed

across night's dark blue-black and in the day

you could

see,

see for

four miles

even in the fog,

with sea salt scents brought in on every breeze

and with the rising sun mountains looked black and the sky burned a ruddy red around a golden ring.

That memory is long gone ten years along with all the naïve

longings

hopes

dreams I could conceive under a star filled sky;

those same dreams –

towers of steel and glass, freedom from suffering, an ideal city where life is something

more than making ends meet day to day –

now turned to betray me,

dreams of silver spire towers raising up to touch the stars

crumbling

scattered

falling away like children's colorful building block monstrosities

abandoned in the path of too many unwary feet.

The night sky of my youth crowned with so many brilliant, shining, living stars –

a chandelier sky over a verdant plain–

now mowed over with an industry whose roots bore so deep into the ground,

pulling

draining life

out of the soil, stones, planet itself to the point where no plant survives and no star shines no bird flies

and the night sky

now empty black

except where it is just the dark

sooty

reflection of the yellow

city light and

gray city life.
