Prologue

Nick sighed as he checked his phone. There were no notifications of course. He had his ringer on full volume, but he still couldn't resist checking to see if he missed something. No such luck of course. The last message he sent to Carrots had gone unanswered all day. Sure, she was probably busy with her police work after all, but Nick was not blind to the growing trend. Used to be that Judy responded to him almost right away. Now sometimes she only responded after he messaged her a few times. And, as much as he liked attention, he greatly disliked coming off as desperate or needy.

It was not long ago that Nick almost became Judy's partner. He had become something of an informant on the Nighthowler case a few months ago. "Informant" was barely the half of it though, he was just as much of an officer as Judy in terms of how much he did. And as pretty as the medal he got was, that was not his end goal. Judy had planted the idea in his mind that he could join the force with her, that he was a natural born cop deep inside. After a while he had started to believe it to. He even put in an application, the first legit job application he had ever submitted.

And it got rejected.

He wasn't too surprised. After all, it's not like Nick was an ex-criminal. He was arguably still a flat out criminal. If Judy hadn't pulled a few strings he could have been arrested on those back taxes just for putting in that application. And, even if he had gone clean, there was still no real guarantee he would have made it. Lots of hard work, hard and honest work no less, was something foreign to him. Coasting on his wit probably was not even possible in police academy. So maybe it was all for the best.

But he still wanted to hang out with Judy. Different occupations aside, he really was quite fond of that dumb bunny. And she seemed to feel the same, they used to go out for lunch at least once a week together. Nick wasn't even sure the last time they did that, at least a couple weeks ago. Judy was a hotshot, and the further she climbed up the ranks and the more Zootopia noticed her, the less time she had for a con artist who helped her out on her break out case. Within a year or two Nck was likely to just be a character cited in the true crime novels and biopics about the Nighthowler case, not her friend.

Then his phone chimed.

He jumped a little at the sound and a small smile grew on his face. That smile quickly went away however as he noticed it was just from Finnick. His relationship with Finnick had become strictly professional at this point. Finnick and Nick drifted a fair bit when Nick tried to go straight for a while. And there may have been a time where Nick got a little inebriated and said a few things he wished he didn't. Regardless Finnick was just a partner for some hustles at this point. Nick wasn't totally sure if he liked things more like that or if he hated it. Maybe it was just him mostly wanting to have someone else to talk to since Judy wasn't as active with conversations anymore.

"Hey Nick, you still have that login for that fake government email?"

Nick sighed. Of all the cons he had run, he was never too much of a fan of the "federal investigation" one. Essentially he posed as Agent Jack Savage and emailed old ladies to siphon some cash. Not only did it feel a little icky to steal from the elderly, he didn't like doing cons where he wasn't working face to face. Sure, he could play the role well, but it just didn't feel right when he couldn't put his spin on it or abuse body language.

"Yeah, I still got Agent Savage. What innocent old timer are you trying to suck dry this-," Nick scrunched up his face and started to delete that message. Too argumentative.

"Yeah, I got it," Nick finally replied.

"Great, I'll send you the contact info for our mark."

Nick shoved his phone back in his pocket. He was going to get to it eventually, but he really didn't want to get into the headspace of conning grandmas right then and there. He took a deep breath and started to walk down the street. Paws shoved in his pockets, he just tried to focus on anything but how dissatisfied he was. If that dumb bunny hadn't come around and dangled the idea of something new in his face, he probably wouldn't have felt so bad. But now he just felt this sharp pain in his chest of regret and…

Wait, no, that wasn't a metaphorical pain. Nick clutched his chest and his breath started to quicken. He wobbled in place in the center of the crosswalk. Somebody asked something, but Nick couldn't hear. Suddenly Nick was looking up at the sky. He hadn't even felt that he fell. He tried to stand back up, but there was no use. He sighed internally as everything started to go black. He definitely was not having a good day.

Nick's eyes slowly opened. Instead of the sky they were looking at a ceiling fan spinning at full speed. He sat up slowly and quickly realized he had never seen this place before in his life. It was a steely bluish grey bedroom with silver colored bedding. There was a nice TV on top of a fancy modern looking dresser. It was honestly swanky, a lot better than what Nick was used to.

He groaned and rubbed his eyes with his small grey paws. Nick froze in place once he realized exactly what he just did. Slowly he moved his paws to his line of sight. Bunny paws. His hands shook as he reached up atop his head and felt the outline of two floppy rabbit ears. At the same time he ran his tongue over his now more squared teeth. He pulled back the covers on his bed like he was ripping off a bandage. For a moment his eyes were caught by the designer boxer briefs, but they quickly focused on the large, strong rabbit paws and the lack of a large bushy tail between his legs.

With that, "Agent Jack Savage" screamed.

(Author's Note: I had this idea in passing and decided I might give it a shot. If people are interested, I'll post some more of it since I've got some fun ideas for it. Any reviews or comments would be greatly appreciated. Any little bit goes a long way!)
