Alone, in the darkness of Patch Works Lab, Dr. Stein sat in his chair, his feet propped up on the near by computer desk. Within his shaking hands laid a lit cigarette, the tip being the only source of light within the shadowed room.
Stein had been sitting there for hours, silent and still. He had been reflecting on his life, the smiles and laughter, the love and compassion. The Kishin he had killed, and the bonds he had made.
One man took up most of these memories, the one who always brought a smile to the lunatics lips.
Spirit.
Everything about him had made Stein smile. His bright red hair, his deep blue eyes, and that goofy smile. They had been child hood friends, even becoming Meister and Weapon. They had the perfect friendship, at times they seemed to be close enough to be brothers.
But that all changed when a young female caught Spirit's eye.
Her name was Kami.
She was beautiful, with long blond hair, and greener eyes then the sea. She had also been a meister, and at top of her class.
Steins smile fell into a deep frown. How happy Spirit had been when she agreed to go out on a date with him. His eyes lit up, a grin taking up most of his face. He could even remember what Spirit had said.
"Stein, shes wonderful! Shes everything I could ever ask for in a woman! That's the girl I want to marry."
Steins hand began to shake. How long has it been now? Three, four, perhaps even five years? He couldn't tell. Time itself meant nothing to him anymore.
The next memory, he tried hard not to think about. It was the one that hurt him the most.
"Kami and I are going to get married. We even have a child on the way!"
"I-Is that so?"
"Yeah! It's a little girl, and were already thinking of names-- Man, who would of thought a guy like me could hook such a fox, huh?"
Stein stayed silent on the phone.
"Anyway, I'll see you around, Stein."
A single tear ran down his cheek. Spirit had been everything to him, yet he was never spoke a word of it to him. He had been afraid of rejection from the other, thus leaving him in fear of expressing any feelings towards him. Even now, he would never dream of telling the other how he really felt.
He had wished things could of been different, but he knew they could never work. Spirit was happy, and that's all that mattered.
He had a wife, and a child. He was a Death Scythe now, and he was working at Death-Sama's side.
"And to think..." his voice broke the silence of the dark room. "I loved you."
His tears turned into sobs, his cigarette into ashes, and his heart...
Into pieces.
