It was a quiet day in the Halls of Mandos. So quiet, in fact that Mandos himself was drumming his fingers on the armrest of his chair. The wind was chilly on the porch of the building.

"Why are we just sitting here?" questioned his wife Varda. "We could be doing something productive!"

She paced across the floor. Mandos, sensing a deep stupor starting to descend over the room replied, "Why don't you do something? You don't need my consent!"

"There's nothing TO do my love. Arda is created, the Maiar are fine, and the firstborn are getting along famously without any of our help! What is there to do but sit back and watch?"

As she said that, she brushed away her hair for emphasis, and accidentally knocked one of the gems on her clip to the ground. Too busy talking, she didn't notice.

"Anyway, even if we wanted to do something, if we had an idea, Illuvatar would never approve. He wants the firstborn to experience life without our help. 'They need experience!' That's what he says." She sighed. "He's right."

"He's always right," Mandos whispered, taking his companion's hand in his own." He created these beings. He created us. Who are we to question his wishes? We should not interfere."

Yet even then, Illuvatar was watching the Valar. He watched as Varda's foot brushed the jewel off the porch, down the mountain, and into the sea. The sand of the sea was attracted to it like some sort of magnet. The build-up grew, and hardened into a wickedly sharp spike emerging from the choppy waves. He observed the one thing he never intended to be with the firstborn entangle itself into their being. Pushing through the mists and folds of time, he watched the pre-written history of Arda being edited in ways he never thought possible.

This is what he saw.
