Who we are

Sam Winchester could have a very dark spot inside of him and mess up everything he touched. That was true, and he had accepted it over a year ago when the apocalypse began to destroy the world.

He had tried to run away from his destiny, bringing pain to the ones who he loved, just to end up playing the role that had been written for him.

He, then thought that there was no free will. Angels were dicks, as Dean said; and demons were just evil sons of bitches who enjoyed spreading hate and war. The world was broken, but somehow it patched itself up every time with thinner bandages that could barely heal any scar it had.

He heard Dean promising that he would not bring him back once he… if he won the fight against the devil itself, but deep down he knew that those words were not entirely valid. He had tried to save him while Dean was in hell, and the only reason why he was not able to do it was because the demons seemed to be pleased with Dean's tortured soul. He hadn't known why by the time, but now he knew everything.

Castiel was meant to save Dean from the hot flames of hell and Ruby was meant to poison him with the demon blood he became addicted to, until the inevitable thing happened. He was tired of the angels, demons and prophecies. Sam knew what he had to do.

Now, standing in front of a bloody and hurt Dean, he was determined to break the rules and have the free will to end what destiny had started. He had made a promised to Dean and himself.

He'd be lying if he said he was not scared. Sam was freaking out and his brother knew that by the way he was looking at him with his good eye. He had to be strong for Dean. He had to be Dean's hero for once. He would do it.

"Sam! It's not gonna end this way! I have to fight my brother!" yelled Michael, still using Adam's body as its vessel.

"You gonna have to make me!" yelled back, feeling how the pit was attracting his body towards it. It wanted Lucifer back, and he was going to give it back.

Sam looked at Michael and then at Dean. His elder brother was begging him to stay quietly through his teary eyes, and that hurt more than the torture he would be inflicted with.

He wanted to say goodbye to his brother, his hero, but he was afraid of losing the control he had fought to own with all the strength he had within his soul.

He gave one last look to his brother, this time decided to end it all, closed his eyes and let himself fall. Michael grabbed him by his jacket, but Sam managed to bring the angel with him as his feet lost contact with the soil of the cemetery.

Both of them fell into the dark pit as a blinding light made them close their eyes. Then the darkness consumed them and Sam found himself burning. He smiled as the fire consumed his skin, feeling victorious. Dean would be okay and that was all that mattered. He had saved the world and also made Dean feel proud of him.

Sam Winchester had a very dark side within him, but he had a good side too. He had chosen to die for his family and friends. He had saved the world because he still believed that good things could happen.

Sam Winchester was a hero.
