How to Stave the Day

Dean and Sam take on a mythical challenge.

Two linked drabbles each using the word.
SPSPSPSP
"Quick through there," suggests Sam.
"Now what?" demands Dean glancing around the cabin.
"Block the door?"
"With what?" yells Dean as the door shakes under repeated blows.
"Will this work?" asks a young man in Renaissance garb holding out a wooden stave.
"Maybe, Dean?"
Dean wedges the quarterstaff tightly against the door then Sam steps away. "What is that thing and how do we gank it?"
"No clue."
"Describe it" suggests the stranger.
"Rooster headed dragon?" suggests Sam, Dean nods.
"Cockatrice."
"Cocka what? More important how do you kill it?"
"They're mythical. They don't exist."
They share a look, "Terrific."
SPSPSPSP
The scratching from outside has stopped. Sam and Dean turn to look at other occupant.
"Are you wearing tights, dude?"
"They are properly called hosen, M'lord. Are you actually attempting to stave someone off with one of my quarterstaves. If so may I enquire who?"
"What not who. You called it a cocka something, dragon body with a rooster's head. So do you know how to kill it? Because this is real not part of your game."
"This isn't a game. We attempt to recreate the Middle Ages and Renaissance besides cockatrice don't really exist."
"Just humor us," pleads Sam.

A/N The title was an intentional pun. I spent the weekend having a different kind of fun and couldn't get over the idea of using quarterstaves to stave off an attack.
