Crash! Glass shattering. The sound of footsteps.
"They're in the house."
He looks up the stairs to see if they have begun struggling against the bedroom doors, but his attention is snatched away by the panel on the ceiling with a chain dangling from it. The one opening he had forgotten to board up.
"The attic door!"
He runs up the stairs, his older brother right behind him. Footsteps above him. His heart racing. His forgets how to breathe as the chain starts writhing. He grabs a chair, stands on it and holds the attic door shut.
I won't let you in.
"This is a very temporary solution."
I told them I wouldn't let anything happen to them.
His brother asks, "How temporary?"
So I won't let you in.
"Twenty-two seconds."
I'll stay here until I collapse from exhaustion.
His brother looks for something large enough to obstruct the opening.
Until you force your way in.
A bookcase! His brother struggles to drag it under the door.
Because I promised.
He can feel his strength fading. He screws his eyes shut.
I won't let you in.
