Disclaimer: I do not own Negima! It is owned by Ken Akamatsu.

Just a drabble-ish oneshot, featuring Negi/Konoka. (Konegi.) Because you have to have more then Konoka/Setsuna, eventually.

Enjoy!

Negi Springfield knew that his quest to find his father was not going to be easy.

But he didn't know that he would have someone like Konoka Konoe to help him on the way.

Konoka Konoe is one of the most powerful healing mages of her generation. Negi has seen her melt away bruises with her touch, stem the seemingly endless flow of blood from wounds, fix broken bones within seconds. He has even seen her halt petrifaction, and her magic is still raw and untapped. As if the magic within her is a spring, waiting to emerge.

You would have expected her to be squeamish, but Konoka merely inspects whatever damage lies before her, whether its minor or serious, and ploughs on through with her work, her magic weaving easily through each wound. Negi didn't know before that Konoka Konoe, who was just one of his students before now, could be so strong.

After all, Negi himself has felt the warm touch of her magic on numerous occasions. It reminds him of sunlight. Without her, the world suddenly seems a whole lot darker and colder.

Her smile makes everything seem less important. And he loves her for it.

Konoka reminds him of spring, strangely. After a long winter, her smile and her words fill him with hope. Like endless blue skies, or the first flowers of the year poking their heads from the earth, into a warm, light-filled world.

But in Negi's world, he knows about the demons that lay in wait for him. He knows that these are demons he will have to fight.

His father's past is littered with strange and dark secrets, and even with his army of Pactio Partners, Negi knows that it will be dangerous. He knew he couldn't rely on just one person. And he doesn't want to see a single one of his partners get hurt, no matter what.

"Konoka-san..." Negi said, and even he can't look at her directly in the eyes. "...I can't bring you with me. This journey is full of peril...I don't want anyone hurting themselves because of me, and-"

"I'm not going anywhere, sensei." interrupted Konoka, her dark chocolate hair rippling in the breeze, flying through the air like shiny fine ribbons.

And although her voice was calm, there was a fire in her eyes as she asked him; "Who's going to heal you? Who else can mend your broken bones? Who's going to pick you up when you fall down, Negi-sensei?"

And Negi, the child prodigy and kid mage, couldn't for the life of him think of even a decent argument to that.

"If it's into the darkness...

Into the light...

I will follow you."

"Don't worry about me, sensei." Konoka explained to Negi, holding up a finger, "I may not be a fighter, like the others...but I don't want any special treatment! Okay?"

And when Konoka smiles at Negi, in her sweet but determined way, he can't help but smile back at her.

Her smile makes everything seem less important.
