"Relax, it's a shoulder hit. I can aim. Besides, who here hasn't shot a few people?"
It had been a few days since Bella the bitch, as Dean referred to her, had shot Sam. A few days since his arm started to throb uncontrollably. A few days since Dean had started to worry about him more than he normally did.
"Are you sure you're ok Sammy?"
"I'm fine Dean; I keep telling you I'm fine. If you would just listen to me…"
"Just let me check where she shot you one more time Sam. I just want to make sure it isn't infected."
"Dean!! Just stop ok, my arm is fine, I'm fine, it's not infected now just let me relax." Sam yelled finally letting his frustrations boil over.
"I'm sorry Sammy; I'm just worried about you. How many times have I told you, it's my job to protect you little brother."
Sam glanced at him feeling guilty for snapping at him.
"I know Dean," he sighed "It's just… I don't want you worrying about me when we should be worrying about you… But I know you don't want to go there right now so let's just drive quietly for a while ok?"
And so they drove on with Dean still wondering if his brother was really as ok as he claimed to be and Sam trying not to wince in pain every time they hit a bump in the road.
It was a little after midnight and the boys we're holed up in some cheap little motel in Greenbelt, MD. Sam was finally feeling like maybe he could fall asleep when Dean's phone rang.
"Hello? Yea, we scoped the town out but no trace of anything out of the ordinary. What?? Alright I got the address, we're on our way."
"What's going on Dean?"
"Bobby got word that some demon has been going around convincing girls to get in his car, then he slaughters them..."
"Wow, ok so any idea why?"
"Well from what Bobby gathered it's this guy Michael that was killed about a year ago. Thing is though, he was a rapist. He picked up girls on the side of the road, raped them and ditched them... Until one girl fought back and ended up killing him."
"And now he's getting revenge by killing any girl that gets in his car..." Sam finished what he knew Dean was going to say.
"Yup that about sums it up. So we need to get out to that highway before someone else dies."
"Alright then, lets get going."
They had been sitting on the side of the road for over an hour but no sign of Michael. The more they sat there the harder it became for Sam to hide the discomfort he was feeling. He tried leaning back in his seat more, tried to shift himself to relieve some pressure, but nothing was working and Dean had started to notice him squirming.
"Sammy, you ok, you arent looking too good."
"I'm fine Dean, I'm just tired and my back has been hurting me today." Sam told him the first thing that came in his head and hoped Dean would accept it.
"Alright if you say so..." Dean responded disbelievingly.
Dean wasnt stupid, he knew Sam was hiding something from him but he knew better then to pry right now. So he let it go and made a mental note to grill him later.
A little more time had passed and just as they began to think the night was a lost cause, headlights appeared about 100 miles away.
"Alright Sam, duck back in your seat so you cant be seen."
As Sam went to lean back, the pain in his arm hit him like lightning and his arm jerked, hard, causing him to hit the steering wheel.
"Sam!"
The next thing Sam heard was the sound of tires squealing away...
