For the case we got yesterday, I was stuck in my lab from eight in the morning yesterday to the same time this morning, handling an absolute ton of information. Maybe I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my work, but sometimes the answer overrides my need for sleep. Especially when we get cold cases and the forensic technicians are far from thorough. ...I'm not bitter...
Unfortunately, even Gibbs' constant supply of Caf-Pow cannot keep me awake today. I found the gun's make, the bullet shells that corresponded to each firearm, and so forth. All of the DNA was supplied, complete with matching addresses to the closest person to the suspects, if not directly to them. I hacked about three different computers with McGee and dug up as much incriminating evidence as possible. Basically, the usual. Normally, I would never complain about this sort of thing, as I find it really funky how everything works out.
Believe me, I love my job, I love my boss, I love my friends ... my coworkers... my team. But today was just one of those days. None of my machines would cooperate, and the mass spectrometer simply had a meltdown. After a lengthy call to the less-than-helpful tech support, I finally got her up and running again, at the expense of me sounding like a complete novice.
Gibbs was being particularly demanding, even after all of my evidence had been signed over and handed in at eight in the morning because Leon was down his neck for something or another. It didn't really help that Tony and McGee were fighting in my lab, Jimmy kept getting under Ducky's feet, Ziva was more high strung than when she first got here, and I was sleep deprived and catty with a limited supply of caffeine and the only candy bars in the vending machine had nougat in them.
Just my luck, I hate nougat.
Regardless, when I got back to my office after closing the case entirely, I was more than a little stressed. I sat down, took a deep breath and started shutting down my equipment. As I went up to grab what was left of my last Caf-Pow, I noticed three small, light blue flowers with the stems braided together upon the edge of my desk. As I picked them up, a little note fluttered down to the floor.
"Something for you, my lotus blossom."
...Maybe the day wasn't as bad as I thought it had been.
