Chapter One

He never heard the gunshot, but he felt it.

It happened so suddenly, it caught him completely off guard. His vision went darker than an eclipse at noon. Light bulbs flickered and shattered as he stumbled backwards against the wall for support. He held his head between both pale palms, gazed up at the high vaulted ceiling with liquid gold streaming from his maple leaf red eyes, and screamed so loud the window glass cracked.

"Jason!"

No air stirred, but his long blond hair whipped about his moth white face as if caught up in a black storm. His teeth grew long and sharp and his ears more pointed than Galadriel's.

He no longer resembled anything remotely human, but a nightmare more beautiful and fail than any artist could ever hope to capture in medium. His skin became lit from within, glowing silver, colder and more distant than an already fading dream.

The kisses.

The long embraces.

The sex that lit up Heaven and made Earth bloom.

The blood offerings.

It was gone. Snuffed out so quickly. The link binding them had been severed.

His only worshipper.

Dead.

Outside the maple trees were crying. The whole grove was haunted with the sound of confusion and rage. He didn't know where to let the lightning strike.

Thunder boomed overhead as he rose to his feet. Invisible and soundless to all but Jason Blossom, he exited Thornhill.

He was the wind. The smell of blood drawing him like the scent of sweet incense from an altar.

Descending through the trees in a fluttering of moths, shadows and spider webs clothed him as his cloud white feet stepped down from the air to stand at the river's edge at his fallen worshipper's feet. Jason was half in and half out of the water. There was a gaping hole right between his milky eyes.

As he fell to his knees at Jason's feet, all the plants began to wither and die around him. He placed his hands on Jason's cold ankles, trying to heal what was forever beyond his power. If only he'd been with him, he could have stopped this, healed this before the ghost had fled.

He didn't know how long he sat like that because time meant nothing to a god.

No animal dared come near because of the violent aura he was radiating. No bird chirped. No insect dared move. All was eerie and silent.

The sun rose.

The sun set.

The moon shown and the stars twinkled.

Time was nothing.

The spell was broken when two young men stepped out of the darkness. They were talking and laughing. He could taste their lust on his tongue. One was walking backwards and fell right over the cold corpse.

Maple leaf red eyes glowed in the dark as the two mortals gawked in terror. Both were staring down at the dead man in the water.

"Jason…" the smaller of the two whispered.

"Kevin, come on!" The larger teen said, grabbing the smaller teen's hand. "We have to get out of here and find your dad."

The one called Kevin shivered. "He was shot…"

The genius loci watched them both run off into the darkness and then went back to keeping his silent vigil. He stepped into the water, not feeling it and knelt down, gently placing Jason's head in his lap. He held him like that and wept tears of gold as the current slowed to a near standstill.

Light soon lit up the dark as the sun started to rise. Sirens in the distance got closer and voices quickly filled the air. Humans were crawling around like ants all over the place.

Unknowing, the humans removed Jason's corpse from the arms of his god and carried it off. Still he sat in the water, not looking away from where Jason had been.

Then he felt eyes take notice of him. Human eyes. Someone was seeing him.

Lifting his crimson gaze, he saw a young man standing up on the bank. He was tall, fair skinned, muscular, and had red hair. He almost mistook him for Jason's spirit. But only for a moment.

He slowly rose to his feet. The water fell away from him as if he'd merely removed a piece of clothing. Both stood gazing at the other. All the other humans began to vanish until it was just the two of them alone.

The human began to make his way down the bank of the river towards him. He made no attempt to leave the water.

The redhead stood before him, feet only inches from the water's edge. He was handsome like Jason and just as sweet smelling.

"Are you real?" The mortal asked.

He nodded.

The redhead held out a large hand. "I'm Archie Andrews."

The deity placed his slightly smaller hand in the human teen's hand and Archie gently helped him step from the water onto the dry shore. The boy made no move to release the god's hand.

"We are the spirit of this land," he spoke, breeze carrying his honeysuckle sweet voice. "Our covenant is broken. All shall fade until a new one is forged in blood."

"Jason…"

"Was Our tithe," he said, not blinking those spooky eyes. "He was taken from Us. Are you not frightened, mortal?"

"This is nothing new to me, well, except my friend being murdered part. Not so use to murder." Archie told him, looking sad. "I've dealt with ghosts, aliens, vampires, werewolves, demons that rule malls, and you look lost and need help."

"This place will die," he said, staring into that handsome face. "Our covenant is no more. If We're not appeased, all of Riverdale shall suffer."

Archie bit his bottom lip, unable to move or look away from those glowing ruby eyes. He couldn't let go of the god's hand either. It was like two attracting magnets.

"Sweetwater will run dry. Already it slows. No flower will bloom. Leaves will fall. We will blight this land. Only the one with eyes to see Us will Our covenant be restored."

"Come with me," Archie said, squeezing his hand, pulling on it. "You can stay at my place until we figure this out."

"You can see Us, mortal," the god said to him, pulling him closer with his honey sweet tongue. "Our covenant will be made with you and We shall punish that ones who took Jason Blossom from Us."

"Great," Archie nervously smiled. "Another weird mystery."
