PROLOUGE

Trapped inside a cell, Olivia Dunham had to keep herself sane.

Being confined to a small room was no way to live.

So she thought of the other side. Her side. Her universe.

She thought of the lab and morning Starbuck's coffee. She thought of the green statue of liberty. She thought of her blond hair and sister and niece. She thought of normal cars and normal airplanes and normal helicopters. Sometimes she thought of childish things like blowing bubbles and eating ice cream on a warm summer's day.

Olivia often closed her eyes and imagined herself back in the lab. She imagined herself running through possibilities with Peter…but then she'd push the thought of him out of her mind. If she thought of Peter too much, she'd feel like bursting out in to tears. And she knew Walter-nate could be watching over her at any given moment.

She wanted to be brave.

She would torture herself with thoughts of what the Alternate Olivia was doing with her life. Was she solving cases? Was she even working? Was she killing off Olivia's family…?

And then the jealous part of her would come out. Was this Alternate Olivia flirting with Peter? Did Peter even know that the real Olivia was gone?

This isn't happening…She'd think over and over to herself. When she was feeling really lonely, Olivia would curl up into a fetal position and pretend she was hugging him. Hugging Peter.

She loved him. She couldn't deny it. She was beyond denial. And she needed him. Olivia needed him so much it hurt sometimes.

Then one night, she had a nightmare. It wasn't a childish one where monsters came out to get her. It was one where Peter died. Alternate Olivia had killed him while pretending to be the real Olivia. The one Peter knew. It felt so real to her that she found herself waking up crying.

She called out his name that night. She sounded so desperate that it was unbelievable that Walter-nate stood by and watched without shedding a tear.

"PETER!" She called, banging her fists against a wall. "Let me see him! Get me out of here!"

She collapsed against the white wall.

"Peter, please…" She sobbed.

He needed to find her. If he didn't come and save her, she might die. She would die.

She covered her ears to block out the sound of her own crying. She couldn't stop. The sound bounced throughout the room, making it louder and more defined.

And she just kept repeating his name.

"Peter…"

"Peter…"

She needed him badly.

Olivia was on the brink of insanity and only he could keep her from falling of the edge.
