California Boys

Lorelai reached for the bag of chips and sunk back down into the couch next to her daughter and Lane. "You know- we all have something in common," she said after a few minutes.

Lane looked at her questioningly. "Other than we're all very sad girls...what is it?" She grabbed the box of cookies and stuffed a few in her frowning mouth.

"Well," Lorelai started. "All of the guys we loved went to California. Why is that? Did they go to the place farthest away from us possible? Were we that awful?"

Rory wrinkled her brow. "Yeah, you're right. But I never said I loved Jess," she pointed out.

Lane and Lorelai gave her matching incredulous looks as if to say, 'Yeah, right.'

Rory pouted. "Well, maybe a little; but what does this have to do with anything?"

She took a sip of her own coffee and turned towards her mom. "It's simple- they left us because we're too good for them."

Lorelai and Lane nodded resolutely. "Yeah, you're right. We shouldn't be sitting here, stuffing our faces and wallowing; we should get out there! What is it that they say? There are other fish in the sea!"

Rory stood up from the sofa and raised her fist in the air. "We're three gorgeous women who can do better than this."

Lorelai got up, as well and nodded, agreeing. "You're right, yet again! I mean, come one- it's their loss, not ours."

Lane came next, and the two Gilmores looked at her expectantly. "Boys suck!" she cried, joining in.

All three laughed, but soon developed equally miserable faces.

"I miss him, though," Lane said, sitting back down with her cookies.

"Maybe I shouldn't have called off that wedding so quickly," Lorelai considered, eating some more chips.

"I did really love him," Rory finished, sinking down, as well.

The three girls turned to each other. "Now what?" they all asked dejectedly.

In unison, they shrugged.

"I don't know," Rory told her two best friends.

"Me either," Lane piped in.

"Yeah, give me a ticket forthis sorrow train, too," Lorelai agreed.

They all leaned back into the cushions.

"How about we go to Luke's for some coffee," Lorelai offered after a few silent moments.

Rory sighed. "He used to work there."

"And I ate dinner with him there...a lot." Lane explained unhappily.

Lorelai frowned. "He and Luke got into a fight once."

Rory, Lane, and Lorelai gave each other sympathetic looks. "I need to wallow," Rory concluded.

"Me, too," Lane said, in consent.

"Not a bad idea," Lorelai sighed.

They all reached for the same candy bar.

As a whole, the three pulled their arms back and dropped back into the couch.

They missed their California boys.
