"Max, honey, could you come down here for a minute?" Called Max's mom, Anna. Max sighed and got up from her desk "Coming mom... aah, ow." Came her daughters reply.
"And be careful on the stairs" She added, a bit too late.
"Thanks" Said Max once in the doorway of the dining room.
"Take a seat sweetie" She indicated to a chair.
"Okay..." Said Max "Why do I get the impression this is going to be bad news?" She asked quietly. Her mother sighed and sat down beside her.
"Now Max, I have some news for you. I'm currently unsure of what your reaction will be, but just listen, ok?"
"Um... Okay...?" She replied, unsure.
"Your um, your father and I agreed to tell you when you turned 15. So... I'm just going to come out and say it. Your adopted." Anna stated. She stared at her daughter and waited for her to start yelling. Nothing happened. "Honey?" She asked, worried. "Max, are you ok? Can you say something? Darling?" Now she was really freaking out. Max just sat there, staring at a crack on the wall. She couldn't think, she couldn't talk, and she couldn't move. The shock had paralyzed her. She only knew one thing. She had to get out. Finally remembering how to move, Max stood up slowly, without looking at the woman she'd always known as her mother.
"I'm going to go to school now" she said in a robotic sounding voice. Then she abruptly left the house.
"But it's Saturday!" Yelled her mom "There's no school"
Max showed no sign of turning around so she raced upstairs, put on her shoes and jacket, and ran after her 'daughter' but only to find she was long gone.
