Sleepless nights don't bother me at all

If dawn comes I won't worry

Something deep inside keeps me awake

I wish that you were right beside me….

~Goodnight by BuffySaint Marie~

"It feels like it's was just yesterday that Buffy came back from death." Dawn though as she watched her sister open her presents from her friends on her birthday. All her friends were there; Xander, Anya, Willow, Tara, Spike even Giles had come back from England to meet her personally and give her a present. They were all like a big family. Dawn took a closer look at her big sister, although she was smiling and laughing, she was glancing whenever she thought that no one would see at the phone and Dawns heart ached for her. She knew who Buffy was longing to hear from. Dawn wasn't sure that he would call today, or any dayin the future. Since he had left Sunnydale the visit and the calls had slowly been further and further apart. Like he was slowly cutting of all the bonds to the past. Like the past didn't mattered, like Buffy didn't mattered anymore. Like no one of them mattered.

Dawn remembered when she was younger and she used to watch Buffy and Angel patrolling, well kissing a lot at the tombs in the cemetery's. Buffy had been so young then, more innocent. Then all the Angelus thing had happened and nothing had ever been the same. It was like one day Buffy had been young and the next one she had aged a decade, she had a knowledge in her eyes that no one in her age should have, heck no one should have that kind of knowledge. Not even when Angel came back from hell did the look in Buffy's eyes go away. It was there the whole we are just friends period and it was there when they ones again tried to be a normal couple. The only time Buffy eyes had lost little of the hardness was after she met Angel after her resurrection. He must had said something or done something that had made Buffy look so young again, like a little girl.

But now Buffy sat and waited for the phone to ring, that her ex boyfriend would tell her happy birthday and perhaps something more, like that he missed her, or even loved her. Dawn know that every little word that Angel said to her sister meant the world. She had seen in Buffy's room a box containing all the little things that Angel had given to her, notes, poems, sketches and other romantic things. The only thing that was missing was her ring, the claddagh ring that Angel had given Buffy on her seventeen birthday, one day she had it and one day it was gone. Dawn had always wondered what Buffy had done with it.
Dawn saw that Buffy had open almost every presents, only a was left, it had no name on it who it was from, and it was very little. Buffy just held it in her hands not opening just holding it and looking at it. She then slowly raised her head and looked at her friends smiling and continued to talk with them. Dawn wasn't listening to what they were saying, Buffy hadn't opened her present, she held it in her hands like a life line. Dawn finally relaxed and joined her family in this joyous day.

The next morning Dawn saw on her sister hand a new ring. A ring from the past.
And the heart on the ring was pointed toward her heart.
And Dawn smiled.

The End
