Regrets
It was New Year's Eve and Lou Vartann was home alone feeling sorry for himself. He was sitting on his couch drinking a beer and looking back on his miserable life.
He had screwed up every relationship that he had been in. First his marriage to his high school sweetheart Marybeth, his now non-existent relationship with his son Jake and finally, his whatever you could call it with Catherine. He had really wanted things to work out with her but she would never truly commit to him and it hurt. He felt like all she wanted from him was sex and while he enjoyed when they were together he wanted more.
The longer he sat there the more frustrated he became. "What the hell?" he thought to himself. "I'm a decent guy with a good job. I know my work hours suck sometimes but I'm still a good guy with a lot to offer." He looked at his half drunk bottle of beer and decided to trash it so he walked to the kitchen and poured it down the drain. He stood there for a few minutes trying to decide what to do. Finally he walked down the hallway towards his front door and picked up his car keys. "Maybe a drive around town will clear my mind."
He drove around town for a couple of hours, driving past a bunch of his hangouts but he didn't stop at any. Instead he ended up in her driveway. He knew she was home as the lights were on and he could see the flicker of her TV through the window. He sat there for a few minutes not sure if he should get out and go to her door or just go home.
Finally he built up his courage and shut off his car. He closed the car door quietly so she wouldn't hear him as he didn't even know if she would talk to him. He made his way to her front door and knocked.
I know this is a little different—please let me know what you think.
