In this story, both Link and Kafei are adults. I thought of keeping them as children, but I decided that it would result in way too many complaints. I'm a big supporter of the Kafei/Anju relationship, but I couldn't get this idea out of my head.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF LONELINESS

Link watched as the Sun mask slowly came to a stop in the glass box, and Kafei walked up to it.

"My mask, I finally have it back." Kafei breathed a sigh of relief as he picked it up. "For awhile back there, I thought we weren't going to make it." He walked over to Link. "Thank you so much."

"It was nothing." Link mumbled as he tried to forget how many times he had worked to get it only to fail.

Kafei smiled. "I guess I'd better go back to town and give this to Anju. You should try to find some shelter."

Link began to nod then stopped. "Wait." He said.

Kafei turned around to face him. "What is it?"

Link ran his hand through his hair and starred at a bug crawling on the ground. He'd never been very good with words and now it was a hundred times more difficult. He kept thinking of the first time he saw Kafei without his mask. He had felt something. A great loneliness had welled up inside of him along with a need to be closer this man. Something about his face had reminded him of Hyrule, and it had come along with a very strong need to be close to him.

Kafei blinked uncertainly. "Are you okay?"

Link was at a loss for words, but he had to make Kafei stay. So he walked towards him.

Kafei's breathing quickened. He could tell that something was going to happen, but he wasn't sure what. "Uhh......"

Link reached him and stopped him from saying anything further.

Kafei felt Link's mouth on his. His mind struggled to understand what was going on. Finally Link broke apart from him. "What....what are....?" And then for a while, all he could manage was screaming.

Through the ordeal, Link didn't pay attention to the yells. He could barely hear them. All he felt was how nice it was to touch someone again, to hold them..... and that the loneliness was gone. He didn't care about the rest. And even when it was over the loneliness still wasn't there. Link thought that maybe it was gone for good. Then, he noticed Kafei for the first time.

Kafei was in a ball on the floor shivering and whispering to himself. "Anju.....oh god, Anju......"

Link saw that the shivers were actually sobs and just stared. There was something unnerving about seeing a grown man cry like that. Link began to shake his head and back away. The loneliness was back and more than making up for the time that it was gone. Link realized that he was outside now. The moon was so close. He guessed that there was only an hour left. Link took out his ocarina and began to play. He would just go back in time. Then none of this would matter. Everything would be fine..........
