Waiting to Grow

She watched him dance with so many other girls. They were all pretty airheads, the dregs of the popular groups of girls. He did not care if he had to play dumb to get them to dance, as long as they were as good-looking as he was. Vanity was one of his vices.

She watched him dance with so many other girls. They all gave in to him nice and easy. He did not have to work for girls. He picked them as easily as he got his good grades. They were all easily manipulated; there was no fight in them. Sloth was one of his vices.

She watched him dance with so many girls. They came and went, content with one night stands. He was never satisfied with one girl for very long. He moved from one to another as easily as he changed the color of his robes. Not one girl of the multitude he danced with could hold his attention. He needed to be cosseted and praised, but he needed more than any one of those girls could give him. Greed was one of his vices.

She watched him dance, and she saw his vices. But behind his flaws she saw an insecure young man who used what he had to find cheap love because he believed that he did not deserve real love. She saw a young man who had been deprived of love, and who needed love more than anything else.

She watched him dance with so many other girls and waited for him to grow out of the worst of his vices. She waited for him to notice her.

He watched her as he danced and wished he had the courage to ask out such an intelligent, strong-willed girl. But he believed that someone with as many virtues as she could never care for a guy as flawed as he was. And so he waited for his courage to grow, and he waited for the day when she would notice him.

A/N: I've been caught up in school-work (AP Chemistry is taking over my life) and I haven't had time to work on Azkaban, so I thought I'd post this little fic I managed to sneak in during class. He is Sirius, she is Shadow.
