Bree was a young horse living in the free lands of Narnia. He loved to roam the wild lands and did not listen to the wiser, older horses when they told of the dangers of playing near the Narnian border. Bree didn't want to be tied down by silly rules. After all, he was a free horse and often took that privilege for granted. One day Bree was gaily frolicking in what happened to be the Narnian border when he saw, unexpectedly of course, strange men coming towards him. Bree was a naïve horse and thought that the people could be friendly people. The only other people he knew were the Kings and Queens of Narnia. Bree didn't understand why the men were being forceful and taking him away. Then he realized that the warnings from the elder horses seemed to be true and now he was in danger of his life, of his free life. The men took Bree far away, past Archenland to Calormene where he was put right away into a slave horse. He was trained before to be a beautiful and great warhorse. He was a horse who knew freedom and knew what it was like to have it taken away from him and was therefore put at a disadvantage from all the other horses. It was beginning to look dull for Bree in Calormene until one day he happened to stumble upon a boy. He was just the kind of human he needed in order to get away and go back to Narnia. The boy's name was Shasta.
