Death Note: Dreams

Summary: This was it. He lost. Yagami Raito counted silently in his head, waiting for his last breath. With one last shaky breath, he plunged into darkness. [AU-ish: hard to explain

Dreams

He waited at the very steps of death. Ironic that his deathbed would be atop of a flight of stairs. His wounds burned as he took ragged breaths. Blood dripped off the tips of his fingers and into the darkness.

This was it. He, Yagami Raito, had lost.

He didn't even lose to L. Instead it was some white haired freak that merely assumed the position 'L' when L died.

A sharp jolt of his heart told him that the shinigami was true to its promise. He struggled to keep his eyes open trying to fight off death like one did with sleep. It was a futile struggle.

Raito counted silently in his head, waiting to breath his last breath.

A startling figure appeared before him. L.

He struggled to see those dark eyes, but his vision seemed to blur. Raito had to see L, even if it was just a hallucination created by the mind.

His eyes shut ever so slowly, blurring the other man's outline. He tried to call out as he drew a shaky breath.

The letter never left his lips, for that breath was his last. And into darkness he plunged.

-----

Light. Sun light.

He opened his eyes to be meet with the startling sunshine that poured in like small strings from his opened window. A nightmare. It was all just a nightmare. Of some…

Of some…of something he couldn't remember. What was it that alarmed his like this? No nightmare had ever made his heart pound in wild circles in his chest.

The morning seemed bleak; did he forget to close the blinds? The alarm clock showed six o'clock. That barely gave him anytime to get to school. School, that's right.

He was a model student bound for college. Gently, the tips of his fingers prodded his shoulder where it hurt. Odd, he hadn't been doing anything that would have caused to become sore.

He was Yagami Raito. That's right. Oh, did that nightmare (or was it?) throw him off badly.

"Mother, I'll be leaving then."

Somehow this time, it felt different.

"Take care."

This time, something would change.

----

This time when he left school, he never noticed the little black notebook lying on the grass.

----

Ryuk was only slightly disappointed. The shinigami smiled, he could always wait for next time Yagami Light came around. After all, today the boy's life span seemed to be pretty short.

Someone came up to pick up the Death Note. Oh, what did you know?

A/N: This was supposed to be something like Raito keeps going in circles: dying, waking up, and going the same path. Then I wanted to end where he never found the notebook, but I couldn't resist! You decide where you want to stop.
