Big Brother

An ape the height of a Village Center waltzed curiously in to a village.

The village was located in a valley between two mountains. It was surrounded by beautiful broadleaf trees, and a Pantheon proudly guarded the way to the village.

In the village, the people lived in relative peace. The cycle of pastoral and agricultural life ran on, as animals and people and crops grew up and died.

The ape stepped on a house.

A cry went up, an alarm bell sounded. "We're under attack!"

"The gods have come!"

"Prepare yourselves!" a voice rose above the chaos. "We knew this day would happen for many months now. A revolution has occurred, and gods now fight each other over ruthless and petty power struggles. We humans are caught in between. We can either submit or fight."

"Fight! Fight! Fight!" a young man shouted. A chant went up. "Fight!"

"Quiet!" the village elder's voice once again took control. "If we fight, we are in grave danger. We have all heard of what happened to --"

Blue birds flew out of the ape's left hand, and the people were amazed.

"Look!"

"The sparkles!"

"The birds!"

"Where did they come from!"

"The gods are cruel, tricky beings!" the village elder once again took control of the mob. "They are trying to impress you! Do not listen to them! You cannot win with the gods; they are petty and cruel and --"

The village elder burst in to flames. Fireballs rained down all around the tribe. Lightning struck the village tower, brightening the land. The village tower toppled. The ape caught it, and put it down on the ground.

Loud whispering was heard and quickly subsided. The ape created food out of thin air and threw it to the people and in the village store. The people forgot the wise words of the village elder. They declared allegiance to the god.

A wooden sign came down from the heavens. On it were inscribed the words:



"Big Brother Is Watching You."
