Aboard RMS Titanic
"Do you know what I've had to go through to give you the life you have now?" Ruth Dewitt Bukater challenged her daughter, Rose.
"No mother, I don't. But it can't be as bad a being torn away from the man you love," sobbed Rose. "You don't know how I feel. You are forcing me to marry Cal, a man nearly twice my age. He only wants me so he can become heir to his fortune, and bully me around using his sadistic ways. All the while, the real man I love is going to be without me."
"Well," scoffed Ruth, "Mr. Dawson is hardly a man. Are you sure he even loves you back? He just wants the money he must think you have and for you to be his little whore. This match with young Hockley is most ideal. Your father has left us in such a situation that this may be the only suitable and respectable match offered to you."
"Mother, I do not want this life, all the pettiness of yachts and cotillions. I can not live this way. I can not live without Jack. You have no idea!"
"Oh Rose, stop being melodramatic and listen to me; I know exactly how you feel and what you are going though. Believe me but this match is what is best for you."
"No mother!" cried a hysterical Rose. "I don't believe you do know what I am going through. If you did, you would not be making me marry Caledon Hockley. I think you only want me to marry him for his money. The money that father lost by gambling and buying his whores. It must hurt to know you weren't good enough for him. You were born into such a fancy life and could not go one day without it. Well you know what? I could!"
"Rose!" thundered Ruth, "There are many things you do not know about me. Many things that you wouldn't wish to hear but it is time I shared my past with you." Ruth continued to explain, her strong "nothing is going to tear me down" façade cracking.
"What would you like to tell me?" questioned Rose calming down realizing her mother's distress; though her face was still flushed. "You may tell me whatever you wish."
"Okay, Rose darling, all of this happened such a long time ago…" Rose sat apprehensively while her mother took a deep breath and began to tell her story.
