Not What I Wanted

Prompt: I let you down...

A/N: Another sad moment in the series for me. Poor Starrk...

Life was short, fleeing before his very eyes. The sky seemed to spin itself around on an axis, creating confusion and dismay within his heart. It wasn't fair, let alone right. From his position, falling dazedly to the ground below, it certainly seemed that he had made a mistake. His decision to join Aizen had proved to be a mistake that would take his life. The problem? The time he had left was far less than he would have liked.

He had only minutes left.

Not only had he failed himself, but his companion. If he died, Lilynette died. Without him, she wouldn't last. For they were one and the same; two halves of one whole; two sides of the same coin. And his fate, without her, would be the same. They sustained each other, pushed each other, gave life to each other. This battle with the Soul Reaper Captain, Kyoraku, had truly been a bad cast of the die. He had rolled snake-eyes, thus sealing his fate.

Were he given the chance, perhaps he would have done something different with his life. Leaving Hueco Mundo would have been preferable to becoming a pawn in Aizen's game. But it was far too late for regrets. There was no way to turn back the pendulum, to take a chance. At the end, it struck him. Life as a slave was not what he had wanted.

There was no pain as he struck the ground. It was but a dull blow, numbing to both the body and the mind. But the Soul Reaper's face was all he saw. Eyes filled with pity, even regret. Perhaps the Soul Reapers weren't quite so evil as he'd once thought.

Nonetheless, this wasn't what he wanted.

I've thought about doing a piece about Starrk's last moments for a while now. I'm pleased with how this turned out.
