Neal walked into the office a little nervous about how Peter would react to his surprise which he carefully picked with Elizabeth earlier that week. He saw Peter sitting behind his desk as usual, hovering over a stack of papers. Neal quickly slipped his gift into a file on his own desk, and brought it with him to Peter's office.
Peter looked up to see Neal standing in the doorway looking stylish as usual.
"Neal" Peter started in a warning tone, "that better not be a case."
"Oh come on Peter, you didn't even give it a chance. It's for a friend of mine who's gotten me out of trouble a few times, so I wanted to return the favor."
Peter looked at the beige folder in Neal's hands as if it were evidence that would implicate himself in a murder case. He really wanted to snatch it from the thief's hands and burn it. With a sigh he said,
"fine, let's see what you got Caffrey"
Neal gave Peter one of his million dollar grins.
Peter started reading the case file, "Caucasian male, late 30's, married. Interests include art and…bondage? Neal what the hell is this?"
Neal couldn't help but laugh at that last part.
"Turn the page Peter. You'll find out soon enough."
Peter looked behind the first page to find a simple envelope addressed to him in meticulously, ornate handwriting. He opened the envelope to find a card with a cartoon burglar slinking away with a heart and the message "You stole my heart…" at the top. Inside the card the message continued, "…it's okay though, if I can have yours." Below the card's message was another one scrawled in the same ornate script on the envelope.
"Happy Valentine's Day Peter. Love Neal. P.S. I did steal the Heart Scarab of Hatnofer."
Peter looked up; about to yell at Neal, but found no one in his office. He looked at the card again and smiled before propping it on his desk and returning to his work.
